IGT 1997 Gamblers Choice Poker
« on: March 27, 2021, 04:57:02 PM »
Hello, just picked up a 1997 gamblers choice poker machine in a Oak cabinet. It turns on, but only shows a white screen. Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what it might be. Thanks

Post a photo of your machine, with the door opened.
It could be a number of things...
Did the previous owner say if it ever worked when they had it?
I'd start by checking all the cables/connectors inside, with the power OFF.
When machines get moved, other things can move inside sometimes.

The white screen on a PE+ is often the high voltage transistor on the monitor.
What happens if you put in coins - does it make any noise ?

So I found that the battery was dead, so I put a new one in it. Turned it back on and noticed the screen flashing the different colors, as it was booting, but you could hardly see it. I didn't try a coin, but I did turn the reset key and pressed the test button and got the single ping. So I am thinking that the monitor is bad? Thanks. for your replies.

Here is a picture of the machine with the white screen. The person that had it before me never had it working. Also I have the set denom. chip, do I need a key chip for it also if I am able to get it working?

Try putting in a coin, as Jay asked.
Also have you tried adjusting the monitor controls?

I will try putting coin in later when I get home. And yes I have tried adjusting the controls on the Monitor and nothing changes. It doesn't shrink doesn't get brighter or darker doesn't change at all. Thanks

That's a GREAT looking custom cabinet someone made there! How much did you pay for it?

Ok so I tried putting coins in the machine, but nothing happened. I noticed that the buttons do not light up now either, since I turned the key and pressed the test button all I have now is a flashing cash out button.

May I ask, what makes you think this is an IGT machine? To the best of my knowledge, IGT never created a cabinet like this.

Can you post some pictures of the inside of the machine?

I am pretty sure that this is a PE+ given the 1997 date of manufacture.
Also to echo others that is a custom cabinet, not something IGT would have manufactured.

It would be good if you also pulled the MPU board and gave us a picture of it.

Its possible that there are no game chips in it or perhaps some are missing.
The PE+ set consisted of a Program Chip, Game Chip, MXO, MRO, MGO, MBO and a Capx chip.
The Program chip was optional depending on the software, older games didn't need the program chip just the game chip.
The others are used for graphics, so if one or more of those are missing the white screen may prevail.
Generally speaking when these monitors go bad they fade to black and are rarely white like what you have described.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

I have an 044 board backplane and superstar poker coming for my game king, can the PE be swapped to the 039 that's being taken out of the game king?

No. The machines are not compatible.

You have a PE+ superboard.
Looks like all the software is in place.
The only thing I am not sure of is if the jumpers are in the right place.

When you insert your board back in does the screen look any different ?

Just curious if the MPU board was loose after transport.

I don't see any change at all. Like I said earlier when I turn it on sometimes you can barely see the colors flashing like they do when it boots up but you really have to be looking for it.

Agreed with Jay that you have a PE+ slant top machine that someone put into a custom cabinet. The identification plate would normally be riveted to the cabinet, not screwed in with wood screws.

Monitors are not my strong suit, and I suspect you have a monitor issue. Hopefully someone will have some ideas for you.
