S5500 Handle
« on: March 19, 2020, 12:59:04 PM »
Hi,

I bought an Bally S5500. It works so far but most of the time the Handle doesn't work.
It only works in a few cases
What can be the reason for that ?

Might need some lubrication in the inside of the mechanism.  The solenoid might not be pulling in due to lack of lubrication.

Have you tried running the 20D test? You can run the complete test cycle or manually move the test to the handle solenoid. See if it fires when it's supposed to.

Hi,

I did the test and the solenoid works perfect.

Maybe I used the wrong words.
The Handle works mechanically, but it give no electrical signal to start the game.
I can use the handle for many time, but the game doesn't start.

Ah, OK. So the handle always releases. The problem is that when the handle is pulled that it won't always start the game? Sounds like you have a Handle Optic Issue. Have you tried cleaning the Handle Optic and unplugging / plugging in it's connector? Also check both ends of it's harness to make sure the pins are seated and firmly plugged into the backboard. I would even go so far as to ohm each wire out to insure continuity. The Handle Optic is mounted on the top front edge of the Handle Mechanism. Handle Optics are easy to find for about $15. If it's not the Handle Optic, then most likely it's an MPU board issue.

I have already cleaned the Handle Optic.

Ok, I will have a look for the cables...
I hope, it won't be the MPU board.

I would have the MPU board tested.

Remove the board and send it to a shop that has the proper test equipment.  KLAR in Vegas can do it.  Www.slotmachinerepair.com
They will test the entire board and repair / replace what is needed. What you get back is a 100% working board.

Is there any other possibility ?
I live in Germany and it costs a lot to send it to America and back.
And it needs weeks or months....

Does anybody know, what to do, to find the failure ?
I´m not familiar with electronics, but probably I have to repair it by myself....

Michael

If you are not familiar with electronics, I highly suggest not touching the MPU board.  You will most certainly cause damage that could render the board useless.  There are many components sensitive to static and without the proper equipment and experience, it's a disaster waiting to happen. If the only problem the game has is the handle not engaging the reels, at least you still have a playable game using the buttons.  Since you are already isolated when it comes to support for your machine,  why not just buy a tested and working replacement MPU board? That will reduce your shipping cost to one direction only and also give you a spare board that could be repaired at a later date. When you receive the board, have an experienced person local to you transfer the chips from one board to another for you. This is not an area to take chances. The rest you will probably be able to do yourself.  I'm saying this in an attempt to help you save your machine.  If you don't want to ship the board in for repair because of cost and down time, imagine what a dead unusable board will get you. This of course is all said with respect.  I have seen too many less critical items destroyed with inexperienced hands. Good luck.

The Handle Optic is okay.
