My first one was the "traffic circle" in Long Beach! And I was using a THOMAS GUIDE!! - Remember those?
I think I made three circles and still took the wrong street.  :24:

When I lived in Fribourg Switzerland almost every intersection had no stop signs, they had this small hub cap sized raised disk in the middle of the intersection. Yes it was a mini round about. What was amazing is that they worked. Traffic flow was continuous and fluid. Absolutely brilliant. The larger intersections had multilane roundabouts and sometimes there were even two back to back like a figure 8 - those were a bit more confusing. The only time you saw traffic lights was when you were entering a major freeway. You needed to stop and look as they have these uncontrolled zones and pulling out in front of a Mercedes going 250km would not be a good thing.

Another time I was doing a spat of work in Carrington which is just outside Manchester (UK) there was a large one and I was coming home late around 3.00am and I went around the round about the wrong way. They drive on the other side of the road and at that time there was no traffic to follow, not to mention I can get lost in a paper bag. Some dude on a motor bike was coming around the other way (the correct way) and he ended up having to lay down his bike to avoid a head on collision. I was totally in the wrong but he was pissed to the gills and although hopping mad wanted nothing to do with the cops and wanted out of the area. He quickly hightailed it out of there once he had said his peace. I don't want to minimize how serious this could have turned out but there is something  about a prolific stream of profanity spoken with a deep English accent that just leaves you feeling you have just exited a Monty Python skit.
