Surge protector questions
« on: March 22, 2016, 09:04:41 AM »
What type of surge protector do you guys recommend for home slot machines ? Had a power outage last year and it killed my lower power supply on my  jackpot party machine.  I got it repaired and im not sure what to use . Also it has to work for two machines.

I have a Woods brand 1500 Joules I bought off E-Bay.  I run 3 machines off of it and have had it 2+ years. The higher the joule rating the better.

Anything rated with high joules and electronic/computer level protection is good. Make sure you check the status light often, especially after electric storms, to make sure it's still protecting. They will only save you once, but some will still pass electricity to run equipment even though they are no longer protecting it. And register the warranty in case it fails to protect you

Surge protectors are great at what they can do, but if you get a direct lightning strike on your power line, power pole transformer or even a nearby tree all bets are off since lightning is a very powerful and phenomenal force. If lightning occurs nearby it can temporarily place a surge of hundreds of volts (or higher) on your grounded water pipes and any ground wires in your home by coming thru the wet ground outside then making contact with buried pipes. Many homes have their breaker box grounded to a metal water pipe or to a grounding rod driven into the ground. Lightning doesn't always come into the home on the power lines overhead.

Maybe I'm overly careful, but if possible the best protection for your slot machines and other electronics is to unplug them when an electrical storm is in your area or forecast overnight. I know that is a pain but if it saves you just once it is worth it in my opinion.

I turn them off, case in point, an energized machine is much more susceptible to damage than one that's powered down. When I was still repairing electronics it was easy to tell if a unit had been turned on when the surge hit versus one that was turned off. Beyond that, electronics wear out with use, it's the heat that does it

Leaving them on all the time isn't a good idea (except for casinos) since it wastes electrical energy and increases your utility elec bill, causes unwanted heat inside the machine and in the room which can shorten the life of the machine's electronics and the heat adds to the workload of your home air conditioner. Also leaving the machine powered on all the time will let the fluorescent lighting fade your reel strips.

Most machines boot up and are ready to play quickly when you power them on, so in most cases there is no need to leave them on continuously, in my opinion. We don't leave our tv's or kitchen oven turned on all the time either, for similar reasons.
