IGT stepper slot turns on but nothing else after battery change
« on: September 03, 2018, 07:28:37 PM »
Machine was in storage and I replaced the battery. It played until a payout was required. Opening and shutting the door over and over would finally get it to take coins again but no coins actually came out into tray. Chased codes 3200 and 3300 for days. Now everything lights up but no self test or coin in display. Did I fry the board and or eprom?

Welcome to NLG!    :waving_flag:

A common problem on older S+ machine that don't work is a bad power supply connector on the motherboard. The motherboard is the smaller circuit board mounted horizontally in the bottom of the machine. The "mpu" board is the larger board that is mounted vertically and it plugs into the motherboard. The mpu also has the 3.6 volt battery that sometimes needs replacing.

With the machine power turned on when you try to move the reels by hand they should have a stiffness and resist being rotated. This means they are getting power. If they move easily then see below.

Turn off machine power. Remove the hopper and look on the front edge of the motherboard for a white molex connector with 6 wires. Make sure this connector doesn't have any darkened or burned areas on it. Be sure to check the backside of the connector. With the machine power turned on if you wiggle this connector or slide it up and down a little and the machine comes alive you've found a problem. See photo below.

When you turn the machine on does it go through the "maiden" spin on the reels and then stop? Or is it just lighting up and sitting there? If it's spinning and then not lighting up the insert coin display, are you getting the door latched all the way? Are you pushing the test switch on the front or back of the power switch, or the big white switch on the front? Pictures might really help us. Since there is an early and late model S+, the test switches are in different places.

It just lights up and sits there. I believe it is an s slot manufacture date 04/87 with eprom ss097 and model 5133-c. the power cord plugs into what the parts list calls a filter with 3 blades( white ground and black) and these red little circle things  from white to ground etc. one of those red disk fuses is burnt. i will post pictures tommarrow and welcome any advice since i have a 2 coin double diamond that has the same problem
Thanks
Dave

If the mpu board has a socketed chip that says "SSxxxx" on top I think that means the machine is an S+, not an S. Also, on an S machine the mpu board is connected to 2 large wiring harnesses that have connectors attached to the edge of the mpu board. On an S+ the mpu board plugs into the motherboard below it.

Where the power cord attaches inside the machine there is often a "line filter". This is an electrical part meant to block electrical noise/spikes. If it is bad you can bypass it, not necessary to replace it for home use. The parts that are burned may be wafer capacitors or varistors (spike suppressors). If these parts are defective that can mean electricity is not getting past them and into the machine, so it will be dead.

But photos will help answer all of these questions.
