83 f error on s5500 - cannot do a ram clear
« on: March 09, 2019, 03:09:58 PM »
Hello
Brand new to this site and owning a slot machine.  I have a Roaring 20s s5500 that is displaying an 83f error.  Here is what I've done so far:

Originally had a "battery low" error so I replaced the battery.  I have verified the right voltage is getting to the ram chips with a voltmeter.
Now getting an 83 f error.
I set the JW10 jumper and verified the battery jumper is in place.
I verified the test and pseudo buttons work properly with a continuity check.
Attempting the clear procedure has no effect.  I've read a couple of posts that suggest pressing the reset button before the test and pseudo buttons but again no effect.
I also read to swap the ram chips but again nothing.

I'm wondering if the next attempt should be to purchase ram clear chips and try again but some of the posts I've read said chips are not needed very often.  The chips are numbered 950000 with a date of 1999.

Can anyone suggest what to try next?  Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Thank you for replying!

The process I'm using is simply to set the JW10 jumper and then power up while holding the pseudo and test buttons in.  Holding the buttons in seems to have no effect.  The machine starts up, lights blink, and 83 f is displayed.  Its the same as if I turned it on without holding the buttons in.  I verified the buttons work with a continuity test.

Again, thanks for the help!

Check the battery voltage across the RAM chips.

Taking a short cut by not removing the board from the tray and simply heating the battery mounting pads and shoving the new battery leads in the holes rips a trace on the bottom of the board.
If a jumper was installed previously on the bottom because of this rip cutting the old battery leads and tack soldering the new battery leads on can dislodge the repair jumper underneath.
Either situation will cause the RAM chips not to get the battery voltage.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

Do you hold the buttons in long enough to do a complete clear. About 30 seconds. Till the display changes to CLC and the buttons flash on the outside of the main door?

Thank you all for the responses but still no change.  I actually just soldered the new battery to the leads of the old battery.  I checked the back of the board and do not see any wire jumper there.  I checked the voltage at the ram chips and have 3.4v.  I reset the chips (saw that suggested somewhere) but still no change.

[/size]When I power up while holding the test and pseudo buttons, I immediately get the voice announcing the game and copyright, and the panel buttons start flashing within a few seconds.  I've held the buttons in for up to a minute with no effect.  I again checked that the buttons work with a continuity check and they check out fine.  83 f is the only thing that is displayed.

Again, thank you all for your help and looking forward to more!

Here is more info from Alan. ---- I have ran into this problem in the past with the older software. Holding in test and pseudo and powering up machine did not clear it, with RAM clear jumper in place.
BUT if you wait for power up then tap the reset button and immediately hold in the test and pseudo button it will clear.
Another trick that has worked is to swap the RAM chips with each other and trying another clear.

So I tried tapping the reset button before pressing test and pseudo as well as swapping the ram chips.  still nothing.  It is like the test and pseudo buttons are not being pressed at all.  I even shorted the button leads before powering up to ensure they were "pressed" but again nothing.  Do you think its time to get some ram clear chips and give it another try?

Thanks again.

These machines error all the time if you want to resolve problems
You NEED CLEAR CHIPS!!!!!

People who own old ballys machines should always have clear chips

Do things properly .....   :fryingpan:
and learn how to do chip clear before just doing it !!!!!

In the 10 plus years of working on those boards I have only had to use clear chips ONCE on a old board with old software and on that board all I had to do was upgrade the supervisory EPROMS to a newer

version and the jumper clear worked after that.
Selling not needed reset chips to someone who does not know how to insert a chip in properly can be a double disaster.

So what are supervisory chips exactly?
Are they used to diagnose a problem or are they game eproms that just fail and need to be replaced?
