Bally 873 mech
« on: October 15, 2021, 06:46:54 PM »
Just cleaning a gummed up 873 mech and it's coming along nicely.  Just that reels 2 and 3 seem to lock in at the same time?.  What am I missing :)

Cheers
Rod

Check the position of the trip lever rods, the 3rd one might need to be moved to a different hole.
See photo.

On the 3rd reel.
The ratchet wheel and assembly could be gummed up. The wheel should spin freely.

The wiper/ index arms should also slide without any hesitation.

All shafts and bushings should rotate freely and move slightly from side to side.

Yep, something is up with the ratchet wheel.  it was gummed up and when i got it unstuck, it turns both directions and doesn't ratchet.  I believe it is meant to only turn clockwise?

Oh hang on.  The armature that sits on the wheel was out of whack and not sitting on it properly lol.  OK, just need to loosen it up a bit more I think :)

Does anyone know the size of the E-clips or Circlips on the trip lever rods etc?

OK, so I have this baby spinning like a top.  But still have the issue of reels 2 and 3 indexing at the same time.

If you manually push the index arm on reel 2 back, reel 3 will go back with it and vice versa. They will both return to index position with ease when you let them go.

If you hold say reel 3 in it's index position and try to move reel 2's index arm back.  It will go back, but there's binding there, and it wont return home until you push reel 3's arm back.  Then they return home together with ease.

We were talking about the variator wheel on reel 3 previously.  it's spinning good now, but I don't believe it's the issue.  However I did notice that it's missing a little wire contraption.  I have included a picture of it from another mech.  Not sure what it does.

Cheers

If these arms are rotating on a related shaft, it could be possible one or both are stuck at that point.
All shafts should spin freely.
An overload of old lubricant that has solidified will keep the arms from moving independently.

Other possibilities would be a mechanical jammed up.

But, it sounds more like old grease.
