Did you try a new starter, the silver can under it?  Any standard fluorescent light ballast will work for that size bulb. If you do go to a local store, make sure you have your bulb numbers with you to make sure it is the correct ballast, and they are a little more then a $1.00.. If you want an original then contact Jim at MidWest Slots.. I’m sure he should have one.

The transformer actually works. It just buzzes like all get out. I guess the plates are loose due to age. Thanks!

You could try putting felt washers or something like felt weatherstripping (or similar) under it, between it and the metal part of the cabinet that it is attached to. If it isn't directly attached to the metal cabinet the buzzing sound might be lower. And sometimes the fluorescent bulb or the starter can will make a sound when operating, you could try changing them.

Another idea, the ballast transformer is held together by a metal frame. On each end of the frame there are some crimped tabs that are curved over. This is what keeps all the layers of the transformer's flat metal plates tight together. You could take some pliers and squeeze each of the crimps to make things tighter. It might be the frame parts that are a little loose and vibrating.

I did try crimping it tighter. It helped a little but still buzzes enough to be annoying. Thanks for all the help! Ian

Some ballast will do this buzzing when they get old. I’ve seen it happen in over head lights where I use to work. About the only thing you can do it to replace them. Not like they are a rare hard to find part.
