Not getting power to brain box
« on: November 09, 2020, 01:24:31 PM »
I had to replace the backplane and even though I took pics (the best I could) I think I must have hooked some stuff back up wrong as the brain box doesn't power on now.

Does anybody have a schematic or some good pics of the backplane with all cables hooked up?

This is for an SMLD AVP 3.0

Thanks!
Marc

Re: SMLD Backplane Board Schematic?
« Reply #1 on: November 16, 2020, 04:11:33 PM »
Hoping someone has some suggestions.

I’ve tried two different backplane boards, two different brain box power supplies (the one that mounts to the side of the harness to the right of the brain box) and have made sure all cables are plugged in.

I’m just not getting power to the brain box. The 12v and 15v green led lights on backplane board are lit, so backplane seems to be getting power.

This ONLY started happening when I unhooked everything and hooked it back in (reason: had to bend some pins on the ribbon cable that goes from the backplane to IGT signature card in brain box).

Monitors power up, but I’m not too surprised there since the main power supply seems fine.

Here is a video I made - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check voltages on the power harness that goes from the backplane to the mpu power supply.  Make sure it is getting power there.  I'm assuming that the "new" power supply for the mpu is known to be working.  The other thing I would check are the  power connections inside the mpu.

Thanks man, I’ll get the multimeter out and test. Should be a known good one, bought it on feebay. I suspect it’s harness as well, hopefully so.

Rick,

I assume I should test here - where should the positive and negative lead from the multimeter go? Sorry, I’m a bit rusty on testing voltages.

Any luck on this? I have a buddy that has the same issue that just started. An ATX swap didn't fix the issue.. A power supply swap didn't fix.. A dist box swap didn't fix.. Praying didn't fix.. - All lights on backplane show normal (except the communication and USB lights)..

Machine powers but zero power to CPU.. Gonna have him meter it asap to see wtf is going on.

I’m in the exact same boat. I still haven’t figured it out, but starting to suspect a bad wire somewhere. I just don’t know the pin outs to be able to accurately test voltages. Keep me posted!

Can just meter it caveman style. Like hold on a black wire then test the others. - I just hope it isn't a backplane cause those are a pain to change out..

Do you have 8 green lights on your backplane and the far left one flashes slowly? I have had a bad main power supply cause similar issues.. (The power supply under the BV housing.) But usually it is an ATX that takes a sh!t..

Yeah, I tried it caveman style but wasn’t getting anything, so who knows. I have two green lights on backplane 12v and 15v, but that’s it. I even have a spare backplane that I swapped out (yes a HUGE pain in the ass), and still nothing.

I’ve swapped out the power supply that goes between the backplane and brain box, nada.

Didn’t think main power supply was bad though since everything else powers on.

So confusing, but I admit I don’t know a lot about it since there aren’t any schematics and such haha.

The main power supply is prob your issue. Under the BV housing.. Have to take the belly door off to monkey with it but unscrew it and look back to make sure the molex back there is seated and straight.. I have had them push back on one side and not make full contact evenly.. But usually the PS just took half a dump.

A bad main PS can power the machine somewhat but make other things not work.. I have had many many many bad ones.. Just mentioning bad AVP power supplies throws me into a rage..

Huh, under the BV housing? I thought the main power supply was in the middle under the ticket printer.

Boy do I feel dumb right now - I'm almost sure that is the problem I'm having - it's loose. Probably done by me when I removed the BV housing to swap out the backplane (for a different reason).
You guys are the best - thanks for taking the time to post.

Out of a fit of rage, I moved the SMLD out to the garage yesterday. Gotta dig it back out and plug everything back into backplane again hahah.

That solved it! The female molex connector in the back of the power supply had one of its plastic holders missing, so it fell out of alignment.

I’m back to my original problem now lol. IGT Signature Error! On boot. I’ve swapped out the ribbon cable from backplane to the card in the brain box and even swapped out backplane, same issue. Maybe the card itself went bad?

It started happening the moment I decided to do a SSD swap. Any clues? (I put the old drive back in).

Thats the boot chip or pci card.. Glad you got the power figured out tho.

*Could be the HD too. Wipe the top 2 after reseating the PCI and Boot 2, then setup again.
