New here... Just got an Aristocrat 1982. Where to start?
« on: August 29, 2018, 11:06:56 PM »
Hiya!!!

Happy to join this community. I've fixed and troubleshooted a few slots over the years, most recently a Mills EM from 1972 and a Summit bench test machine... Long story there. I've had my hand in a lot of Ballys and couple of IGTs, mostly successful results, but it's been spread out over the years. You can read this as 'Im a tinkerer'... Heh. Now I'm finally here and signed up on NLG.

Anyways, these were all for friends and family. Recently tho I aquired my first slot of my own. Hopefully I didn't bite off more than I can chew here... It's an Aristocrat IGT 1982 machine. 5 reels.

Can anyone here suggest where to start with this machine?

When I bought it a few days ago, ataold owners it powered up and played, but had issues (I think the reel solenoids were not engaging, so the reels kept spinning, and then machine would hang). Got sound effects and LED credit display.

Now upon bringing it home, I only get lights and fan. What can I do from here? Any guidance appreciated!

Welcome to NLG!   :waving_flag:

When a machine is dead or nearly dead the first place to start checking is things like fuses and the power supply. The line cord (power cord) is ok and power is getting to the machine since the fluorescent lights are working. Check all fuses that you can find. Look over the electrical connections on wiring harnesses. Remove the mpu board (the main circuit board) and look for anything obvious like burned parts or leaky battery.

If it worked (more or less) at the seller's location and then at your home was not working this suggests something happened in the transport. If the machine was laid on its side then any loose coin or screw or other metal object inside the machine can bounce around and get underneath something (circuit board, transformer, etc) and short out a connection.

If you will post a few photos of your machine you are more likely to get responses. Photos help everyone here to know exactly what you have, what model of machine it is. And sometimes we see something in your photo that triggers an idea for troubleshooting.

Thanks for the advice! I think I've got some time this weekend to pull out the boards and take a look at them.

Allso you're right... here's some pics. Let's get a visual!

Come to think of it, I might know what caused the machine to be in it's current state of not booting...

Before I could stop him, the previous owner yanked out the reels and hopper while the machine was on (while we were about to load it). Anyone seen what this would do to a machine like this?

Wow... No kidding? I think the logical place to start would be the fuses, I haven't had a chance to yet. Trying to find a free evening to get started on this project.
