maybe i missed something along the way - but isn't this a 3 line machine?  if so the CUTS do not match up as single line games. a 7 is NOT the deepest cut - attached is a 1091 (3 line) wiper 3 which clearly shows 7s can be anywhere - the only way to debug the reels without a wire diagram is to chase the 7 payout from the payout unit back to the reel mech and then to each wiper board.

that's right.  There is no guarantee that any particular symbol is the deepest slot on an index disc on all machines that use the symbol.  The guy who mentioned the 7 being the deepest slot did say "usually", and that may be true for most machines that have 7's.  I've never looked.

that's really the point.  I think you can position the reel tapes and the wipers without any documentation or tracing wiring.

the tapes can be positioned to the index disc using the reference hole and the center/only payline on the reel glass.  You don't care what symbols are on the tape, you always align the top symbol.

the wipers can be positioned on the contact plate if you index the disc into a depth 1 slot.  If you have an index disc without a depth 1 slot, afaik it will have a depth 2 slot so you know exactly where the wipers are supposed to go.

the caveat is a depth 1 slot is different on 20 vs 22/25 stop games, so what column of rivets the wipers go on is therefore different.

if that doesn't make sense, do you want to see the docs for a 1091 so you can verify?  If so, which 1091 model?  I probably have info for the 1090 and -1 thru -3

if you have the game, a picture of the shallowest slot on the index disk would be helpful as that's a 22 stop machine.

Great work you guys,  GOS is correct, sometimes you have to chase the 7s paywire through the boards, generally starting from first reel. Mark positions on boards with a sharpie. Also, a first check should be proper wiper position, and a rough quick check for this is to remove the reels and push wiper arms all the way back.
They should align near or on the last set of buttons. It’s a good quick check.
Yes, multi line machine 7s are not always deepest cut.
