IGT S+ crashes when it remains idle for a couple days
« on: June 13, 2023, 12:58:28 PM »
got an S+ Triple Play 5CM w/ SS4410 and SP611. it was dead when i purchased, have got it working reliably on all parameters of operation and payout.  BUT.  sometimes when i see it in the morning after a period of being plugged in but no play, the LEDs will be dead.  just opening door and closing SOMETIMES brings it back but other times the white button must be held down. then it has issued 65-1, sometimes 61 but it always returns to service after closing the door.  and very occasionally, the machine will crash during play requiring a power off reboot via the switch.  then it comes up fine.

here's what i've done to bring it back to life:
- new battery
- replaced motherboard power connectors, cleaned/scraped pins, DeOxit
- recapped main board including power supply section, cleaned transformer power connector
- DeOxit all plugs, mainboard connectors, power supply plugs
- hopper connections and mechanism cleaned (20 coin wrapper pieces behind pin wheel!)

the EPROM chip stickers had fallen off.  i applied masking tape to them to keep light out but could the chips have gotten corrupted even tho it plays fine?  i've got the florescent tube starters out for now so the cabinet is staying cool. ideas?

I think what might be happening is that the small eeprom on the end of the motherboard could be going bad.
I've only had to change out that eeprom 8-pin chip on two motherboards in all my years.
One I put a socket in and just threw in a new chip.
The other, I cut the chip legs, de-soldered the holes, threw in a new chip into the circuit board holes, and added solder to the legs.

Both times, I lost all the accounting data.
No problem.
Another time, I didn't have any time, I just swapped out the motherboard for another one to get the machine going again.

thanks for the reply!  i'll keep that IC suggestion in mind.  one thing i didn't do previously that i did yesterday was to lift each socketed IC, 4 i think, apply D100 DeOxit to each pin, and re-seat.  machine was still up this morning but that's not unusual.  if i can make it a week, or especially two without a crash that will be significant.  with intermittent problems, it's so hard to know when to celebrate!

well, as a follow up...  the machine continued to exhibit unreliable behavior after the chip D100 treatment and resetting in the socket.  62-0 errors, slow reel movement, dead display, difficulty booting up requiring several power cycles.  to that end, i ordered a set of RAM clear chips and a new SP611 game prom.

the reset chip arrived today, game prom on Monday. being impatient and against much advice, i did a RAM clear.  symptoms don't fit with what a RAM clear is suppose to fix but i did it anyway.  machine came up, one error, cleared easily, and is now operating faultlessly. so, i'm resetting my arbitrary 2 week clock of stability without an error starting today.  if a get another 62-0 error, i'll replace the game prom right away but i'll hold off sticking it in until this existing one is proven bad.

the machine had sat for a long time with a dead battery before i got it. dunno if that can cause a multitude of errors that a RAM clear can fix.
