Bally alpha conversion to game maker
« on: February 14, 2021, 08:15:52 PM »
Need a little help and not sure where to start hopefully you guys can help me out.
Over the years I have been upgrading my Alpha from a mechanical reel game to a dual monitor video version.
Now I want to convert it to a game maker hd. (I have the software card)
I have any cpu unit that may be needed  ( I  think)
I plan on using a 1 ghz cpu with the added video card and 2 gigs of ram.
I have the software, game maker button panel with the extra controller board and two LCD monitors installed.

1) Will a 317 OS work?
2) Bios avbbp26simpu87-07 will it work with OS?
3) Where does the controller for the button deck mount?
4) Where do the deck plugs go(1 usb and one 8?pin molex) that come from the deck controller card?

IGTs I know, Alphas not so much.
Thanks
Rich

I believe with that bios and a 1Ghz cpu (best with 2gb ram) with dual video you will want 336 os and 335 clear.
I have never setup a game maker, it may need a different os??

Thanks Mark,
I think I may have that OS.
Having trouble with your link working
Would a different CPU work or does it need the 1 ghz with 2 gig ram?

You don't need the 2GB of ram, but all the alpha gamemakers I have seen, have used the 1Ghz mpu (and typically not the one that is expandable to 2gb).  The control board on my game maker is attached to the metal plate on the door.  The molex is for power and connects to a harness that goes directly to one of the backplane's aux power plugs, it is a straight pin through harness.  I have found that OS 33x works best, although it is supposed to work with a variant of 32x, but I've issues using that, so I only use 33x now.  Photos of door attached.

Thanks Mark and Rick
I'll be using a 1 ghz cpu with 2 gigs ram and the added video card with the 336 OS.
Thanks for the picture Rick now I know right where it mounts.
I'll post back with my success or failure in a few days.
Thanks again.

The Game Maker is up and running.
Thanks for some additional help from Rickhunter.
Things could have gone a little easier though. I spent over a day trying to resolve a USB issue.
As I stated this was originally a mechanical reel Alpha and that is what created the problem. I still had a few USB items connected even though they were no longer used (Original bezel light controller was one). This never caused an issue when I switched to first single, then dual LCD monitor themes. Not so with Game Maker, as soon as I cleared and loaded the software I kept getting " USB disconnected errors" even though the new panel would go through its self test procedure when it was booting up. I replaced panel driver boards, played with USB plug locations and even a CPU replacement. The fix was too simple, the USB controlled panel is the only USB device that can be plugged into the system. I removed all legacy USB devices and the machine now is working.

Thanks all.
PS if anyone has some game maker inserts for sale let me know

Rich
