Is this the same as changing a WBA 11 to a 12? There's an updated WBA 12 on Ebay (head and transport) that's updated to 3.80.
Would this work to replace his WBA 11?

It would replace an 11 in a ID024 machine but not ID023. It would need flashed for use in a S Plus.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

No, direct replacements are WBA10/11.  The WBA 10 does not use eproms, it is flash memory, other than that, they are exactly the same.  The WBA12/13 is the same case, the WBA12 is flash and the WBA13 is eprom based, both the same thing.  To migrate from WBA11 to WBA12, you would need the new transport and the corresponding harness for the back of the validator cage.  And the firmware for your machine type.  If it is an S+, then firmware 3.75 flashed.

Draco,  a lot of information in this thread!   here is what you need!   you need a WBA 12/13  with software for IDO 022/023.  doesn't matter if you get an eprom version or a flash version, either will work, and you are at the end of the software updates for this unit anyway.  so you will need a transport unit with the right software and a new cable, the cable will adapt the output of the WBA to the machine power supply, which will have three or four connectors on it.  this is all contingent that the head in your current unit is good.

to test the unit you have, do the following.  remove the cash can,  take out the wba 11, place dip switchs 1-2-3 & 8 in the on position, all others in off position,  now, insert the wba in the machine, apply power,  turn dip #8 off, the unit should cycle briefly, now you can run bills through the unit, if the unit is working it should accept the currency and deposit it in the cash can area.  with your unit, it will only accept money heads up and facing the right way. That's another plus to a WBA 12/13, it has four way acceptance.    this should tell you if your current unit is working.

I have tested , working units, flashed with the software  you need, ( accepts the new 5 dollar bill).  for sale.

Hope this helps

Thank you for the help!
I tried what you suggested for the dip switches. Unfortunately it didn't work. The Bill validator made noise but would not take a bill, or could not tell that a bill has been inserted. How much would a current working unit be?

You know the problem could be with the cash can itself. If the two don't mesh correctly it will stop the whole process. There are a couple of slides in the top of the cash can housing that could be tweeked up. This may make a better connection and could possibly fix the problem.

The cash can is in snug. The bill validator will only make a noise when turned on if its in there.

The bill acceptor will not notice any bill placed in it. I got a set chip and activated the bill reader, I tried to clean the sensors, and checked all of the cabling. Still no luck in getting it to see that a bill has been inserted. The valadator sensor is on and working, so maybe the break-beam sensors are dead/off. Is there a way to turn them on?

Hate to say this, but I had a couple machines that the DBV stopped working in, tried everything I could think of, and a few I didn't.
Turned out to be the mother board in both cases. Lights on but nobody home so to speak, they were activated and powered but wouldn't accept anything.
Just a thought, kinda sounds similar to the problem was having. if you have another motherboard, I would try swapping them out to see if that's the problem.

Question.. Do you know if this is a working WBA assembly? I have had many WBA units that the bill head was bad. They would cycle on startup but wouldn't take any bills.

Gary
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

The bill valadator is enabled and set to 25 dominations.

I hope its not the mother board. I do not have an extra to test with.

I do not know if it is working or not. I have been trying to test to see if it is or not. That sounds like what I'm getting, and right now I'm thinking its the bill head. Unless there is something I am missing.

I did notice that there where two connections unplugged. I'm not sure what they go to. My slot is missing the topper so they might have something to do with that. When I traced the bill valadator cables they did not go to the unplugged connections.

Those black boxes in your last picture are SAS connections to a casino network -- they would not have any impact on your bill validator.

There is 2 things you can try to clean . On each side of the transport there is optics in the gear train. There is a small black plastic windmill shaped flag which rotates with the gear train and has an optic board mounted next to it and creates a signal. use some canned air and blast the optics  to get dust out of the optics. Do you have another scanner head you can swap to this transport to rule out the head? The scanner head has two boards with optics mounted on them. Take the metal plates off top and bottom , one side at a time. Clean the dust out and blast the optics on the board. Clean the clear plastic lenses which the optics see through. Clean with Q Tip.

Thanks for the idea. I took the head apart and cleaned both the sensors and the covers. Still not working. Unfortunately I do not have another head.

The light for insert bills was flashing (something new) when I was testing the bill valadator, but only when i do the dip switches 1,2,3, and 8 on. Then tun 8 off. it also works when I do 1,2,3,4, and 8 then 8 off. I have tried a few dipswtich setting to see if that was causing anything, with no luck.
