Igt s+ battery drains fast
« on: May 07, 2023, 06:31:08 PM »
Total newbie here. I replaced the battery in  an igt s+ red white and blue about a month ago , already it's dead. Replaced it again,  Now my machine will shut down after 10 minutes of in activity and will not restart. Could this be the transformer?

Are you able to submit a clear 1000KB photo of your MPU board with good lighting?

The transformer is removed because it was rusted from leaking battery, also battery is unsoldered due to removing transformer

You don't need to un-solder the battery to remove a board transformer....or vice versa...the MPU has battery contact soldering  tabs on top of the circuit board.
All that's important is the (+) positive side of the battery is soldered facing towards the top of the board.

Put the transformer back on,  there's nothing wrong with it - it's only surface rust.
Push down on the tab of that one dirty pin (probably the female pin that has the green wire is the dirtiest one)  in the Molex housing of the transformer connector, slide it out and  clean it with some household medicine cabinet isopropyl alcohol on a Q-tip.
When cleaned, pull back up that tab you pushed down on the pin, with the tip of an Exacto knife or something pointy.
Then push the female pin back into the Molex the same way as the other pins, until you feel it lock in the housing.
You'll know it's locked in when you pull back on the green wire from the rear and it doesn't want to come out.

The rust you see on the connector is in a blank space( first position the green is in the second position.

If there's no rust or oxidization on the female pins inside the Molex, then it shoud be okay.

As far as the battery dying, I really do think you have a short.
Why?
Because , I've had MPU boards sitting on shelves for upwards of 15 years.
When installed in a machine, they retained the original CMOS settings and accounting.
They never shot out a low battery code [12] and were completely operational.
Mind you, not all were that good...some batteries were bloated like dead fish floating in the Hudson river in NYC.  :knockout:

Check the 3 fuses....are they all good?
They should be quick-blow fuses.

Also check the legs of the three main eproms....GAME, REEL, and CMOS chips...especially the CMOS chip.
Make sure none of the small chip legs are folded underneath the chip body and are all straight into their respective socket holes.
This is where the bent screwdriver comes in handy.

I just ran into that problem on a customer's board. The positive lead of the battery had so much solder blobbed onto it that it had flowed to the pad just below it. That pad is logic ground and it kept draining the battery. Remove your blob and look for a short.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.
