Battery changeout and clear chips
« on: September 03, 2020, 08:30:32 PM »
Picked up my first S2000 and the first issue is low battery.  Checked the main battery which measures 4 volts, the coin battery measures .7 volts, so a coin battery is on order.  With just replacing this battery, will I also be required to order the two clear chips to reset a possible RAM error ?  Thanks

The coin cell is the main battery. You should not need clear & key chips but you should have them for future use in case you wish to change something in the setup or encounter an unrecoverable error. The green Varta battery should be removed to prevent acid damage to your board. If you have the enhanced board you need to remove the U16 IC as well or at least clip the 3 pins.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

To remove this green Varta battery for good, I would assume to also remove U57.  If the board works without it, why was it there in the first place ?

You do not appear to have an enhanced board, so just removing the battery is enough.  The green varta battery was used to backup certain sensors used by the casino in case of chassis intrusion should the power be turned off on the machine.  That is why it is called the telltale battery.

Not to highjack this thread but i am getting a Main Batter Error (low) on mine too. So it is the coin battery not the cylinder one? Also what where and what would the part number be? I also heard that you have to change the coin battery socket and use a 2032?

The socket change is an idea so you no longer have to de-solder the old battery and solder it back in.  It's a lot easier with the socket.  But you certainly don't have to, just a recommendation.  If you have a series 500 board, you are advised to remove the green cylinder battery (what we usually call the green Varta battery) because as it ages, it begins to leak acid and damages the board beyond reasonable repair.  Most 500 series boards have 2032's with solder tabs on them.   Like these:

I solder a single "AA" battery holder to the board with the 3.6 volt battery hanging out the tray. Every 2 years I change the battery while the machine is on. That way I keep all my credits. Very good for Bally 6000 too

Thank Ya Thank Ya Very Much.

So a AA battery is equal to the 2032 in specs?

Not to be confused with a regular AA the therockinelvis is talking about a 3.6v lithium battery.

Anything that provides 3 volts will work.  You could solder a standard 2 battery AA holder and just use standard alkaline batteries, or  the longer lasting 1.5 volt lithium ones.  You should remove the green varta, the video you posted shows replacement of both batteries, the green varta is not used at all.

So if so remove the green varta battery from my 504B board, will any error pop up? I understand that I can permanently remove it with no long term effects, but will any error appear pop up temporarily that I will have to clear?
