U2 Backplane Chip
« on: February 05, 2024, 09:13:57 AM »
Hi everyone, the awesome guy I bought my S2000 Triple Double Diamond machine from is sending me a replacement MPU board and a C35 chip replacement.  I wanted to learn what the C35 chip's function is on the backplane and why it requires replacement/swap with a MPU board change.  It's the only socked chip on the backplane/motherboard.  This is a 502 MPU & Backplane pair.

C35 is a surface mounted capacitor. The chip you are referring to in the socket labeled U2 is the eeprom that stores the cabinet setup memory.
Quality doesn't cost. It pays.

Thank you for Clarifying.  Is there a way to wipe that chip if I were to switch MPU's or backplanes around?

Yes, a clear chip will do it.  That said, in normal circumstances there's no reason to "clear" one unless you need to change the accounting denomination.

The reason he sent you a chip with the MPU board is so it will be "plug and play" when you get it.  That EEPROM stores some of the system settings and the processor board ID which is unique to each MPU.  You put the chip in the backplane and install the MPU and it should boot right up and be ready to play.  Otherwise you'll get several errors you have to clear first (with the jackpot reset key) to get the machine back up.  And even after that there may be some changes that need to be made that would require using a keychip to change.

Follow your "awesome guys" directions.  He seems to know what he's doing and he's trying to make it easy for you.  The hard part is reaching it on a S2000.

Thank you for the clarification.  Unfortunately, I was unable to "clear" the machine since there was $$$ on it, and I couldn't remove the funds because things didn't work (buttons, issues).

You can clear with credits on machine, you just can't key it with credits on machine.

As I've said, this is a learning process.  Maybe I just had a bad Clear chip (rather than it not working).  When I tried to use it, no lights lit on the board after insertion (I followed the clear/key instructions).  I ordered new Clear/Key chips from RB so I will be trying those, probably this weekend.  I used "IVC00097" for the clear chip on my 1270 board.
