Hello, just picked up project 956. Told it wont accept coins. Needs good cleaning. Cleaned up all switches. Started checking out, first reel spin. All reels kick off by manually tripping handle. However, reels dont lock in. Found that timer clock doesnt spin. Linkage stuck towards back of machine. Wont come forward.

Any thoughts, going through manually and not ready to dissassemble just yet. Thanks. Jim

Sounds like all of the reels linkages need to be cleaned and oiled. The old lube has dried up and hardened.. Your also bogong to need oil the clock assembly.. One other thing to look at is the white air cylinder on the right side of the reels assembly. Take it apart and clean out the old seal, then apply a light coating of grease so the steel piston will slide.

Thanks for reply Am. Do I have to pull harness, wipers and boards to get at all linkages?

No you don't.. I take and push forward on the linkage that goes into the air cylinder till I get the gears on the right side are about half way, then put a small screw driver in between the teeth to keep then in place. Now you can remove the reels and cross shaft that they spin on. Once removed you can remove the screw driver.. Now you can get at the linkages. NOTE.. Be careful of the plugs ( beau plugs ) on the back of the reels. Those can be bent or broken off if your not careful.. I've done it before. The round pins will snap right off. The shafts that run side to side should spin freely unless the have a roll pin holding a lever in place. Same goes for the back shaft..

Thanks. Pulled reels. Going to use some "Knock'r Loose" on linkages and let soak in. I will spray clock gears too.

Well I wanted to pick up a slot to learn on, so this is it. Pulled reels and meters (for better access). I can latch the reels if they were in place and spinning by reaching in and down in back releasing the connected levers. Problem is the connectors attached to bar with timer barely moves. I can hand wind clock a bit and short lobe in pic moves a bit towards rear of machine then unwinds to position in pic. Thats as far back as it goes not nearly enough to trip the levers that causes reels to latch.

Do I need to pull clock? Any thoughts?

Well, I got the reels to cycle and latch/stop. Problem was teeth missing on at least one gear in clock. If I get gears pass missing teeth it unwinds till hits that spot again. Going to be looking another clock.

I have a few clocks in storage.

You can drive the roll pin out of the clock, and the, using the outside ring of the gear, turn it 90 degrees. This gives you a whole new set of teeth to use. Then just re-pin the shaft and you're good to go. \
You can get 3 extra uses out of that gear that way...we are speaking of the large metal gear, yes???

Unfortunately it was not the largest metal gear. Wasn't the smallest gear either. Going to replace clock. Just last two days I have learned a lot how mechanically reels work and stop in order. Pretty cool.

Nice looking and very clean. Metal looks fresh which is a good sign of maintenance and not being stored in poor climate.
