Newbie with a 1046
« on: May 11, 2020, 12:36:45 PM »
Hi everyone.  I'm Eric and I just got my first 1046.  It came with some furniture that was a part of our new to us house purchase.  I haven't found much about this machine so far but I started with the handle locked in the pulled position.  According to the previous owner someone pulled the handle while looking at the house.  As it stands now I have the handle up.  The machine I think came from a carnival cruise lines ship as the front glass says "The 'Fun Ships"'.  Its a nickel slot.  At this point I have been trying to get it to cycle right but the grease in it seems to be gummed up badly.  If I get it to start correctly it would recognize the coin drops and light up the pay lines.  When I pull the handles the #3 reel spins.  The other two not so much.  And the #3 reel stop drops but #1 doesn't and #2 is a maybe.  I've manipulated the payout bars and confirmed that the hopper works and pays out though the amounts don't register on the counter.  Occasionally the handle will jam in the down position.  Also at some point the top box with the payline indicators stopped working all together.

I hope this is a good starting point to troubleshoot this.  I'm finding that I'm intrigued with the fact that there are no electronics (ICs) to speak of.  Its definitely a bit different than my arduino and drone stuff.

I would love any thoughts and ideas on where to begin.  It will be a little slow going until I can locate wiring diagrams and mechanical schematics and get a work bench set up here in the new house.

Thanks

Eric

wrt to the grease, it's pretty much clean off the old stuff and put on new.

personally, I use stuff like "tri-flow" lube with ptfe on things like the reels, shafts and clock gears rather than grease or oil, and just use grease where metal pieces slam or slide against each other.

if you flip down the tabs holding in the reel shaft, you can remove the entire shaft and reels and take the shaft apart to clean.

with the reels out, you can access all the linkages under the reels and usually clean/lube without taking any of that stuff apart.  Spray carb/brake cleaner is pretty handy.

the manuals are on http://bingo.cdyn.com/slots/ in bally_manuals/

the schematic for the 1046 I don't have, but I do have other paperwork which I'll post.   I do have a schematic for the 1045, which I'll clean up and put on the web site.  The 1045 is a 3-line game, while the 1046 is 5-line, so the line unit will be different.

The 1046 is similar to the 873-ZZM,  so I will post the paperwork for that also.  There may be differences in things like jackpot bells, light towers and most obviously the plug connections ... the 873 used jones plugs everywhere and the 1046 jones plugs + molex plugs ... but if you take the reel/payout counter part of the 873 schem and the rest of the 1045 schem, you'd probably be close to the 1046.

until you find a 1046 schem,

Thanks for the reply.  yeah I've started looking at the mechanisms.  It seems that the little arms that kick off the reel stop/payout arms are really gummed up.  I'll probably clean and lubricate those as assembled.  As for the reels they seem to spin freely but they look easy enough to break down to clean and re-oil.  The clock seems gummy too.  Any issue with using a dry spray lubricant or PTFE?  How picky are these machines to lube type?

dry lube is good.

lubricants have advanced since the machines and manuals were made,  so pick a modern one that won't gum up anytime soon, isn't prone to attracting dust and is intended for metal-on-metal interfaces.

if a film lube is used where heavy grease was typically used, you may get a bit more noise.

Clean and lube the mechanism under the reels for starters.
These machines are made up in units that can be removed for maintenance. Probably best not to disassembled any part of a unit at this time.
Best to clean sections of a unit then test. If you clean to much and the machine gets worst, then the possible cause is wide spread.
Attaching photos of the machine is always very helpful.
