Did you check the connector on the HDD?  Also, you might try a clear and reload the game?  Batteries good?

Yeah any smaller capacity ssd will work just fine, and improve boot times as well.

I bought some used intel 40GB SSD 330 series.  Have  been working great.  I also tried sandisk ssd with no issues.  They are pretty cheap nowadays.

Yeah, the Sandisk SSD is what I'm using.  Larger capacity drive, but I got it for around 50 bucks at Best Buy a few months back.  Works awesome!

What's the purpose of the SSD on these machines? Does the software on the CF card get uncompressed at bootup and copy itself or the graphic images over to the SSD for use during game play? The mpu board has plenty of ram for running stuff like that??

Play a game like Great Eagle 2 or Gorilla Chief on a BB1 and then play the same game on a BB2.  The BB1 lacks certain animations and sounds due the lack of a HDD/SSD and less RAM.  On a BB2, the files are written to the HDD/SSD for access. 

This was a big reason why I converted my machine...not to mention all of the other awesome games that are available!  :)
