Bally 5000+ Power Supply Help - Replacement PCB
« on: November 01, 2018, 04:21:07 PM »

First off, this guy worked perfectly for almost 20 years in my Gold Rush, far better than the OEM's not-so-stellar rep.

But alas, the +5V has died and I can't find any info/schematics on this.

It looks like a close or direct replacement for the original Black PS, but has different parts and layout.

Look familiar to anyone?  Vital Power Technology P/N 900-023-000 Rev 5.

Certainly fits in there well.

Any info or recos?  Thanks!

Well, haven't been able to figure this out yet.

Not getting any exit voltages at all. Without a schematic, I'm a little lost.

Fuse is fine, the DC is getting rectified after input, don't see any obvious part failures.

Looking around, I've found mention of a 5000 plus replacement power supply, I'm thinking this might be one of those?

Any help on where to look further is appreciated!

Check for shorted capacitors on the output.
That is a common failure in power supply’s.

Hi, still f-ing around with this from time to time.

Recapped everything with no change.

Having a hard time following things without a schematic to understand where the critical part may be.

Getting 120AC in, DC is rectifying on the board, but no voltage at any of the 4 outputs.

Took it off its mount and found some more part numbers - actually came from Bally.

Anyone have a recollection of them using this vs. the black box PS?

Any help is appreciated!  Thanks!

  • Jameco Part no.: 323695
  • Manufacturer: MEAN WELL
  • Manufacturer p/n: RQ-85D
Is suppose to be a replacement for those older power supplies and cost under $40.00

Thanks Badbaud!

I was looking at that Meanwell PS, but saw that it was only rated 1A on the 24VDC line. Bally had that fused for 8A. Do you happen to know what those devices (e.g. hopper) require?

I saw another post suggesting that the -12VDC is not needed here (except for the Rx/Tx board which isn't used at home).  Is that correct? If so, I saw a triple output PS without the -12 that was rated 4A on the 24VDC.  Is that a better choice?

Thanks!

Give it a shot, if it works let me know.
I was leeary about the 24V rating also but some one said he had one put in, waiting for his comments.

Took me a while to get to this, but found a power supply that seems to work as a replacement for the 5000+.

Check this link out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Output-5V-12V-24VSwitching-power-supply-for-arcade-machine-mini-crane-machine/152761337582?hash=item23914906ee:g:4VAAAOSwSTpb1Fju

It is 250W, and output the following:

+5V 6A
+12V 10A
+24V 5A

I spent some time searching for one that had the highest amperage for the +24 line, as that drives the hopper and I was worried that a lesser alternative wouldn't cut it (since the schematics have that line fused at 8A.

Seems to work so far, not hard to install, and as previously stated, doesn't look like the -12V is needed for anything in home use. I velcroed it to the power supply plate next to the transformer, nice and neat, and my Gold Rush is rushing again

Thanks for the advice along the way!

3 to 6 week wait! Was there any manufacturing names or numbers on it where a cross could be found?

Hi Badbaud!

Not sure of your ask, but the Bally replacement I had that died (as pictured earlier in the thread), couldn't find anything on it, and all new caps didn't fix it.

So, the one from eBay/China seems a good replacement, fired right up, runs everything the way it should, and fingers crossed, this relic will run for more years to come.

If you're referring to the slow shipping from China, the pictures in the listing (if you zoom) have the manufacturer and website listed (although not a familiar name). If I remember correctly, it was only about 2 weeks to get here.

Looked at a lot of them (Meanwell and others) and this seemed to have the best amp mix across the needed voltages, and didn't see another one that had 5A on the +24 line at that price point.
