Error 42 - center reel

I have a project S+ that had this error when I received it. I switched reels 1 and 2, and the error remained as 42. I was thinking it may shift to 41 if it was the reel.

Board issue? Wiring issue?

It could be a reel driver IC on the MPU board. Use a known working MPU board.  99.9% of S+ are 3 reel machines.  If it is a reel driver IC issue, you could just swap the reel 4 or 5 ic with the reel 2 ic if that is the case.

Ok, I will check the manual for location of the chips.  If these are socketed, I should be able to swap the chips to see if the problem moves to confirm, right?

Appears to be the reel itself.  I swapped the connector from the third reel to the second and received an error 43.  I then swapped the center reel in from my other S+ and the error went away.

Sounds like you may have fixed them both.

Ch3ck the optics on the bad reel and make sure they are clean, not blocked and nothing is loose/hanging that might hinder reel spin to any degree

I couldn't see anything blocking the sensors.  I wiped everything down real well.  The wheel spins freely and straight and the tabs are about 3/4 of the way into the sensor when they go through as the wheel spins.  In the meantime, i scanned in the 3 reel strips so I can start touching them up in Photoshop...
