Bally IO Board Question About IKE $1.00 Game Only Board
« on: October 25, 2015, 10:39:10 AM »
I have a question about the Bally E-Series IO board labeled

AS-2980-5610
IKE $1.00 Game Only

What makes this board so special that it's only to be used in the IKE $1.00 only games? Does it have something to do with the hopper having a larger and heavier coin in it? Can it be used in a Quarter machine? Does it have to do with how the S1-S5 jumpers set?

Thanks, Gary

I am here - little rusty on this one - believe it has something to do with the coin comparitor and the scavenger coil - would have to dig my notes out.

This machine does not have a coin comparitor now, but it must of at one time because the little 2 prong plugs there on the door..

Do you see any mods done to the board compared to a normal E-series I/O board? (jumper wires added, parts that have been removed, parts that have been added, etc?)

No mods that I can see. Even the jumpers look the same? I have one of these in my parts drawer with the same sticker.. I know the hopper in this machine runs faster then most I've work on. It can spit out a 10 coin payout in about 2-3 seconds. Sounds like a machine gun..   :angry_kitty:

Maybe the difference is a prom or eprom on the board that has different software? Do any of the chips have a stick-on label or ink-stamped writing from the Bally factory with a part number that is different from the standard I/O boards?

It looks like the chip circled in yellow below (U10?) has Bally factory writing stamped on it (in addition to the normal chip mfr writing), maybe it is different than the same chip on a standard I/O board?  Also, U15 is another programmed prom. I'd check the Bally writing on these chips and compare them to the same chips on a standard I/O board.

If I remember correctly? Wasn't there a switch mounted at the coin return button for just the Ike setup? Not sure what that switch would do when you push coin return when a coin jammed in the mechanical comparitor? Does the elec print mention anything about "IKE" version ? Wasn't there a repair manual for just the Dollar machines?

the marking for IKE dollar is only important if you are using CC not mechanical acceptors - the brake on the cc is reversed for the IKE CC - if you picture the way the coin is processed the IKE dollar enters top right and exits bottom left - whereas the small coin enters top left - exits bottom left.  The brake or divertor of the cc is reversed hense the mod to the IO board - it is one of the JUMPERS but I don't have that info available. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the information. This machine did at one time have a comparitor, because the wiring for its still on the door.. I thought it was a jumper setting on the IO, and if I remember correct it has to do with jumpers 4 or 5.. One side of jumpers 4 or 5 share a trace, but the other ends are separate.. You only use one of the two jumpers at a time. I just didn't know what they were for??

Thanks Gary

Gary

From my manual the straps on the IO board are explained as follows after this additional information

The IO board has a part number AS2980-56XY
There are 4 straps S1, S2, S3 and S4

Explanation
If Y = 0 (i.e. AS2980-56X0)
S2 is installed and S1 not installed

If Y = 1
S2 is not installed S1 is installed

If X = 0 (i.e. AS2980-0Y)
S4 is installed and S5 is not installed

If X = 1
S4 is not installed and S5 is installed.

These straps affect the output port #2 data bits 01 and 02 (data bit 01 = Q18, data bit 02 = Q17)
Q18 controls 4 items (consult FO-6502-12), Coin lockout, a different with coin lockout and a switch
which may be the switch Sunrise was talking about, Coin Analyzer Board (CC comparitor?) and finally
a $1.00 coin lockout

Q17 controls the normal coin deflector

You really are more concerned with S4 and S5 but I will go through S1 and S2 just so everything
is documented for you and others that may be curious.

If S1 is installed then output port 2 data bit 2 is inverted, inverted means that a logic 1 turns the circuit off
If S2 is installed then output port 2 data bit 2 is normal which means a logic 1 turns the circuit on

If S4 is installed then output port 2 data bit 1 is normal, meaning a logic 1 turns the circuit on
If S5 is installed then output port 2 data bit 1 is inverted meaning that a logic 1 turns the circuit off.

For clarity, logic levels are defined as a logic 1 being a voltage of at minimum 2 volts and a maximum of Vcc
but typically 4.7 volts, this is also often referred to as being a logic HIGH
A logic 0 will range in voltage as low as 0, typically 0.2 volts and as much as 0.8 volts. This is also referred to
as a logic LOW.
