M645-609 Daughter Board for MPU 1000
« on: November 07, 2015, 09:54:27 AM »
I've gone through all of the documentation on this that I have been given thanks to the forums, but I don't see any pictures or schematics referring to this daughter board which plugs into J2.

Anyone know why it was added and if it was necessary?

Thx,

Jason

Since it is a Bally board it should have a Bally number like AS-2985. Where did you see the board number "M645-609", did it mention another part number or name for the board?  It could be the board that connects by ribbon cable to J2 was an optional Credit Display or Replay Display board that was used on some machines in certain jurisdictions that allowed that type of play, but others here may know for sure.

Here is a list I saw that has some of the extra boards used on Bally E-series machines. Some connect to the MPU board, others connect to the I/O board:

That board is a buffer/amplifier board and is used to isolate control signals and data. You will see these on
E-Series machines that have a sound card

*update needed*

The Board mentioned above is for the display, and it has 1 IC and a resistor pack, there is a second similar
board that is used for the IO which has 74LS245 IC's

If you have the Bally FO-650-13 manual you will find these boards on pages 39 and 40

Update:

Since the last time I posted this, I just reverse engineered the board and made a schematic.

:)

Since I finished the schematic, I just went and laid out a new PCB in case I ever need to order a new one, not that I think this will ever happen  :propeller:

Attached the 3D of the board as well.

Too cool!    :cool_thumb_up:

Did you figure out what that board is for in the machine and what it is called? Your 3D photo filename suggests it is an LED Driver board?

That particular board is the Display Buffer Board AS3127

There is a similar looking IO Buffer Board AS2518-89

Thanks, that helped me to find it. I have the Bally FO-650-13 manual but this board is on page 37 in my copy. Maybe I have an older version?

dawinasm86- your 3D photo shows the board resistor as a 1meg ohm, but the AS-3127 drawing shows the resistor to be a 1k ohm??

Actually you are correct, what you see on Page 37 is the Display Buffer and what darwinasm86 built is the IO buffer board shown on page 36.

The 1K resistors are a resistor pack, 8 resistors in a 16 pin dip, the 2 IC's are 74LS245 Octal Bus Tranceivers.

My apologies because I responded without really looking at the 3D layout in darwin's post

Yeah for 3D drawings of components, resistors, caps, inductors, its easier to make one for the package type for the footprint and finish the layout.

Doing one for each type is a waste of time for me, and the real value comes in for making sure the footprints are correct, and clearance.

Yes this is a buffer driver board, but based on the design, unless there was an issue with the regulation of the drivers on the MPU, I don't know why they added it..

Most of the people here have a lot of knowledge considering the history of these boards, I'd just like to know why some of the decisions made were implemented.

I've also reverse engineered the MPU 1000 and RAM PCB and changed the interface of PCBs to be the standard 0.1" headers so that I can get the parts easily.

I feel better having a full set of schematics I can read and know what's going on  :propeller:

Thanks for the help so far :)
