Been battling code 41 on a machine that has worked fine for 20 years. I have sent the 10 mhz board off to be checked and serviced but I have also ordered a replacement reel. How to I install old strip to new reel in the correct position? I do not see any notches on the reel? I have a IGT S+ . Thanks ( I have also ordered new door optic switches).

The reel strips should have notches about an inch above from the bottom where they separate.  There are 2 notches, one on each side.

I see the two notches on the reelstrip but the wheel basket doesn't have a notch for them to fit them in they lay in there flat???? I have a manual on order for this machine but it is two weeks out.

Rub your finger around on the outside of the reel basket.

You will feel for a raised molded nub.

Those nubs are on both reel basket sides.

Inside of the basket rims, there's a nub that corresponds with the cut-out notches of the reel tapes.

What I'm concerned about is whether or not you have "Upright" reel baskets or "Slant" reel baskets.

On the back of one of the reel halves are the raised molded lettering which should denote 'UP" or "ST".

I'm only guessing when I say you have an "Upright" S+ machine cabinet? Not the "Sit-down" slant machine?

Are the reels and strips different within each type of the IGT S+ upright and slant machines?  I noticed some for sell, plus various game kits and don't want to purchase the wrong type when I go to replace my game.  I have a similar machine.

The reel strips are the same for an upright or slant top machine. The reel baskets are different -- that is, the nub in the slant top basket is in a different position to compensate for the different mounting angle of the slant top reels. If you buy an S+ kit it will work the same in either type of cabinet.

Thanks for the info on the reels & strips, one more question about the S+ models.  Will the MPUs and mother boards interchange each other?

I've noticed some MPUs for sale and I'd like to pick up a spare with another game already installed and working for my upright S+ machine.

  • The only way to beat the casino is to own it.
The S+ boards are all interchangeable.....

There are two types 10mhz and 16mhz. The 16mhz do not have the blue volume knob on the side. Volume is controlled by software.
The reel chips (reel number) you use on a 16mhz board is the same as a 10mhz board but the chip has to be physically faster than the ones for the 10mhz board.
The faster chips also work on the 10mhz boards - original faster chips are hard to come by in the wild and most people simply burn their own.

The game chip is different because it has the extra controls for the sound but functionally its the same other than the sound controls. Ie chips 1271 vs 1274 - again the chip has to be faster and the 16mhz chip won't work in a 10mhz board and vice versa.

Some people like running older game chips like the 731 - as you can change the pay out ding-ding-ding sound  for one of seven different songs. This feature was eliminated in newer chips to make way for more accounting information asked for by the Nevada gaming commission. Subsequently these songs and such never made it to the 16mhz version.

Finally the 16mhz version of the board has a constant humming/buzzing sound even when the game is not being played - you would never notice it in a casino setting but at home you certainly do. Its due to the higher frequency and a lack of isolation in the sound components.

My recommendation is to stay with the 10mhz boards which are plentiful.... and have a greater game variety than the 16mhz cousin.

Now you made a comment about being able to simply swap boards to play a different game. In addition to the glass and reel strips you do need to go through the game change sequence and if the game chip is different you will need to run the SET chip to re-activate the bill validator. There is a CMOS chip on the MPU board and the Motherboard (small built in board that the MPU plugs into) - when these two chips get out of sequence you need to go through the game change ritual. The reason for the tight coupling is that even if you were to lose power mid spin - plug the machine back in and it completes the spin just like nothing happened. The Nevada commission can also theoretically audit the machine through these chips and determine if the machine has been tampered with.  I am sure you have seen the stickers that say "malfunction voids all plays and pays" . On the NLG home page there is Ricks FAQs that document how to do a game change.

Finally to fine the notch on the reel basket simply run either the corner of the reel strip or a folded piece of printer paper around the track in the basket you will "run into" the notch and then you will ask yourself how you totally missed it the last 10 times you looked for it. - Happens to me everytime....

Thank you Jay for all that info, that's some good to know stuff when that time comes.

I'm currently having problems with my chip SR1271 or something else (asking in another post) because I'm not getting the sounds other than reel stop.  Sounds like if it's the chip, maybe I should change over to the 731 like you mention.

My other machine the Haywire Deluxe has the SR1274 chip and it makes the sounds like it should.

Thanks again for your info!

Jim

I am not at my computer so I can’t send you the aettings but the reel sounds are a settable  option.
It’s an easy change.

If you were getting no sounds it might be the sound chip but as your getting stop sounds I am pretty sure it’s not that.

You will want to get a copy of the PAR sheet pertaining to the reel chip and the PSR sheet for the 1271 and 731. Not all themes (reel chip) support the music in the 731 but the PAR sheet will tell you that.

I would like to add that if you look on the back side of a reel basket, you will see raised, molded lettering that have the initials of either "ST" or "UP"...meaning "Slant" or "Upright".
