S+ plays but won't go into test
« on: October 06, 2021, 01:37:13 PM »
Double diamond 5 line, plays coins perfect, has no bill validator. Added bill validator, doesn't work. Discovered the test button does nothing. What should I be looking for?

I'd start with the test button. Had to replace one on one of my machines as the previous owner took a pair of vice grips or something to it and the button would no longer depress. The wires are usually soldered on the back and you can access the back of the switch with the CPU removed(early S+ intermediate cabinet). The wires are pretty short, at least on my machine, so removing the button to test from the front might not work. Button location depends on which cabinet you have, so your mileage may vary. You'll have to get the test button/switch functioning before you can do anything else....

Did you use a SET015 chip to enable the DBV?

Test the test button with a multimeter for proper operation or replace entirely...wherever it is located on your machine.

Also, the test button will NOT work if the door optics are in a closed state - bypassed or not.

One way to check is to drop a coin through the optics while the door is open....if it registers a credit, then it is still in a "closed" state.

Optics good, switch is good, still no test. Attendant key does nothing either.

If the test button is good as you say, not sure what method you used to determine that, maybe more explanation would help us help. Same goes for the optics.

If the reset/attendant switch does nothing with the door closed or open - it should work both ways. Is the reset/attendant switch working? Test it also.

You mention in the 1st post the machine plays and works.

That does not leave much else except the MPU board or wiring from the switches as I assume the test button is not on the MPU tray but positioned by the power switch. I would look at the wiring from the switches to where they end up at the MPU board and see if you can find a problem with the wires. Basically - the machine works, the software and MPU would seem to be in good shape.

With the information you have supplied - I would guess wiring problems?

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

I tested the "test" switch at the plug near the board. It shows open/closed on my meter. Optics work, based on trying to play a coin with the door open and it not registering and the fact that when I close the door the machine goes through the little dance with the reels and the insert coin light turns on.

Maybe a dumb idea. If the attendant switch is wired backwards would that cause the issue?

Reset switch wires don't matter as long as the switch just has two places/tabs to place the wires on. It is a momentary switch that just connects ground when activated. No polarity if that is what you mean. If it's the original key switch it will only have to tabs. If there are 3 tabs, then the wires need to be on the C (common) and NO (normally open) tabs/connections.

Test switch would look to be working.

Optics seem to be working then also.

If you still can't get the test switch or attendant switch to work - MPU may be bad. ???

You should have my contact information from previous PM. Call if like.

That's where I'm leaning. How hard is it to swap to another game? Say I take the board out of another machine and swap reel chip and game chip?

You can do that but may need to clear or use set chip to get a BV working if it has one. Without the test button working - using the clear and set may not be possible. Just an FYI ...
