Backing Up BIOS
« on: January 10, 2021, 03:33:06 PM »
I would like to backup my boot chips just in case of failure in the future.  I like having a backup as parts are scarce and I have all the equipment.Using a Willem 4x4 (the v4) programmer the PM49FL0004T I have that covered but having a hard time with the 25P32V6 SMD chip on the DIP adapter.I have some 25P32 chips that i can read with the adapter from Willem but trying to read the 25p32 right out of the card the GQ-4X4 doesnt seem to recognize it.
Anyone have any ideas?

I don't have a Willem programmer, but my cheapy TL-866II programmer read mine just fine.  A document I have says the chip should be either a S25FL032A-M or a ST25P32 V6P so if one doesn't work try the other if it's supported by your programmer.

Tilt, are you able to read without an adapter of any sort?  I cant seem to get any type of read on this device with the SMD to DIP carrier but can read the SMD chip with the adapter.  The pinout must change. The willem GQ-4X4 seems to be a go to programmer for this stuff and I have used it for years but this one has me stumped.  Im going to run through all the devices that have "25" and "32" to see if i get a read.

No adapter other than the DIP adapter that the chip is already soldered to.

Great, thanks for the info.  I am going to try and get the programmer you have.  It will be worth it.  The price looks reasonable.

I've had it for a few years now and it works well, especially for the price.  Think it was less than $50.00 with a couple of adapters.  I don't think they're updating the software for it anymore though, they have a newer model out and other companies started counterfeiting it too.  Not sure if mine is counterfeit or original, but as long as it works I don't really care.  Thought it was funny for one Chinese company to complain about other Chinese companies counterfeiting their products.  The irony in that :24: .

I was wondering if these PLCC32 adapters would work?

You removed the BIOS chip from the adapter board?  If so, did get everything soldered back correctly?  Does it work in the machine?
Edit:  Nevermind I misread your reply.  Not sure why you can read it in your soic -> dip adapter, but not on the one that it comes soldered to.

slotman,

Are you talking about the Bios chip in a WMS BB2 or an IGT AVP?

Because mine are socketed in a BB2

So what I found so far is in the adapter that it comes soldered to, pin 1 of SMD is pin 1 of carrier.  Pin 2 is pin 2 of the carrier up to pin 16 respectfully.Than I took my OHM meter to the factory adapter that came with the programmer.  Started with pin 1 of SMD and could not find it on the DIP side.  At that point I was tired and threw in the towel.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the GQ-4x4 programmer isn't supporting it? :scratch-head_3:
On the MCUMall website is where you'd have to look to see if they do or not.
There's a blog there somewhere where guys ask questions about how to read certain chips.

So when reading and writing with the adapter provided there is no problems.  This tells me its supported.  The docs also state its supported.  When its in the factory carrier / adapter the device cant be read.I am going to map the pins out later.  I know on the carrier its pin 1 to pin 1 all the way to 16.  Im thinking that the ZIF adapter for the programmer possibly maps them differently for some reason.

Kinda sounds like that may be the case, although I'm not sure why they would do that.

I went ahead and picked up one of these programmers.  For $50.00 and got a bunch of neat adapters, an extractor and some other things I have no idea what they are.

The little thing work fantastic.  Plugged the DIP 16 adapter and it read - wrote like a champ.
So it got me to wondering why my setup wouldnt work with the chip in its oem carrier but when i use a SMD chip with the programmers adapter I can work with it.  I traced out the pins on the adapter provided by willem for SMD - DIP16 and found out that Pin 1 doesnt map out for some reason.  I guess that tells the programmer what pins to map internally.
In my opinion anyone backing up the AVP bios should consider this cheap but very effective programmer.

That's good news.  Not sure why the GQ-4 doesn't map the pins out like they should be.  I've been really happy with this little programmer.  Does everything I need it to do and the price was right too.
