My Wild Cherry Labor Day score...
« on: September 03, 2018, 02:34:56 PM »

Free for the taking, so I be taking.  Seller said it worked fine, till it didn't.  Easy fix... don't they all say that?

DIRTY old machine.  I spent some time cleaning and so far once I get the dirt off it shines pretty nice. I have not plugged it in yet.

I have a Red White and Blue that I was going to park this one next to but I surprised that this cabinet is only 18+ inches wide, My RW&B is 21+ inches wide.  I haven't compared the height yet.

Winter is coming and I needed some inside projects to work on...

I even got a stash of quarters to get me started!

NICE!
I think you should do a video for the initial power up. Then we can all see the  :lightningbolt: :lightningbolt: :lightningbolt:
Hopefully not!

Check inside by that transformer for loose coins before you try powering it up. Also check your power supply plug on the mother board for burnt plug connections.

I didn't know IGT made the S+ in different widths, 3 inches skinnier is a lot. (said the belt on my pants)   :garfield:
I've heard of the shorter models for use on cruise ships but not normal height ones that are more narrow.

Looks like you will need a coin tray, unless you removed it for the photo?

Congratulations on your find! And the reels already show a big jackpot winning spin! :cool_thumb_up:

That's a very early s+. Probably same cabinet as an s. No room for a bill validator.

Thanks Mark!

So it was when IGT added the bill validator that the cabinet got wider. And that means the narrow cabinet models can't be retrofitted to add a bill validator. I guess the Wild Cherry game theme has been around since the beginning of the S/S+ run.

Very interesting!

l know very little when it comes to IGT.  I was a red white & blue fan since l learned what a casino was.  l saw an older lady hit a big win on a dollar Wild Cherry. They brought out the bright lights and cameras and dang near scared her to death.

l was surprised that this cabinet was more narrow than my RW&B cabinet.

l gots lots of cleaning to do here before i plug it in and see if l get the curly perm from it.  :lightningbolt: :lightningbolt: :lightningbolt:

lt was moved from a dirty shop to a corner of a dirty basement.  I have to scrub to get clean.  It looks pretty nice so far.  I do have the hopper and coin tray.  I believe it is parts complete.

I am collecting winter projects.  Winters get pretty long in MN.

l appreciate the tips/info shared so far.  l hope l don't need your help but l am sure questions will come up.  l'm sure it will need a battery?  l have never cleared an IGT so l got some learning to do.

l was disappointed at first that it wasn't the twin to my RW&B cabinet but it is a cute little machine.  FYi both cabinets are the same height, just one is 3 inches less wide than the other.

My RW&B is the first 'reel' cabinet l ever got.

Would 'reel' and 'stepper' describe these or is a 'stepper' something different?

If it’s been sitting a long time, I would pull your MPU and check the battery to make sure it’s not leaking.

I think it being a little less wide won't be anything to worry about, to me it adds to the variety. Since it is about the same height that is probably more important than width for matching up machines. And the Wild Cherry glass artwork is a really nice appearance. A lot of people have different size machines due to them being different models and different mfrs. And you can always sell it and get another project if you want to.

My understanding of this:
I think we use the term "reels" kinda loosely for any type of spinning reels. The stepper slots have a stepper motor that actually turns the reel by making small steps very quickly so the rotating motion looks continuous. The stepper motor lets the mpu board stop the reel at exactly the right position it wants. On older machines that didn't have stepper motors the reels really did spin freely and then would come to a stop by a mechanical mechanism that suddenly stopped the reel.

.....If it’s been sitting a long time, I would pull your MPU and check the battery to make sure it’s not leaking.

That's good advice from Amechanic. A leaking battery caught early will save the mpu board from having to be replaced. Plus if you pull the mpu board and post a photo of it we can tell you more about the game, like what SS and SP chips it has. That information will be helpful to you later. The 2 socketed chips on the mpu board should have labels on top with the SS and SP numbers written on them. It is easy to remove the mpu board. It is mounted to a metal "tray" that has a round black knob. Just pull upward and the mpu will unplug from the motherboard below it.

There were many different cabinet styles. I’ve attached a pic of a S+ cabinet that was meant to be part of a back to back slot machines. Their were two machines bolted back to back, made the depth of the two games  shallower then 2 standard cabinets on two stands. I’m assuming these were used on earlier Cruise ships. I worked on this one a little over a year ago. Strange setup inside, the MPU was located behind the top glass. The machine wanted to tip over with the door open and the hopper removed. Very unstable.

I guess they figured the stability of the machine would be ok when it was bolted to the 2nd machine behind it. Was the mpu in the top box because there wasn't room down below?

Yes. There was barely room for the hopper. I remember opening it up and saying, ( where’s the MPU )?? I just followed the wires up.

I think the OP has one of the "cruise ship" cabinets -- they were narrower so they could squeeze more machines into a limited casino space.  Nice score for free!

The 2 machines were fitted together back to back like puzzle pieces, then were bolted together.. I guess the few inches they saved meant the could get a few more machines in a smaller area..

I think the OP has one of the "cruise ship" cabinets...

This post brought up some very interesting information of how things used to be.  I remember when I first went to a few MN casinos they were small and dark so space was probably something to think about.  Today the casinos are HUGE and bright and the new slot cabinets are wide and tall with multiple screens and toppers...

Yep, the price was right on this cabinet.  I really appreciate the guy/family that offered it up.  I did offer them some money for it but they just wanted it gone.  It was the last of 4 cabinets that his father bought to keep mom home and out of the casino.  It was really ugly/dirty when I loaded it up, my gloves smelled like poop after.  They had offered it up to a few peeps but no one would go out to get it.  They were only an hour away from the city.  He was at the point of parking it on the edge of the road with a free sign.  I feel I saved it from being target practice by some wild country boys...

[yes there are hillbillies in Minneapolis...]

There are some huge dust bunnies inside that I have to kill off with my shop vac and some more disinfecting before I can drag it into the shop to be worked on this winter.  I will follow up on this post once I get digging into it.

While I like cabinets where I can install a TITO and play with tickets there is also something kewl about a cabinet that will only use coins...

I am going to have to set up a video room and a coin room if this keeps up...

I think I remember you mentioning that zig-zag cabinet in a post back when you were working on it.  I have never been on a cruise ship but I sure wouldn't turn down a chance at a pair of those.

You won’t be able to have a TiTo simply because there is no bill acceptor or printer. Plus these machines were just at the point where they started putting bill acceptor on them. On the outsides.
