Cooling Fan

Hi All, I have a Games of Las Vegas  video poker machine. 80's probably. Set up to look older but still a solid state machine. My concern is that it pays off really well (not that) but I have to put coins back in because I win so much. This is where everybody starts laughing, no when I open the door it's so HOT in there I could cook a hotdog. Do you think a cooling fan and side vent (like a S2000) would be wise or should I let be well enough alone? I am just worried that because of the age etc. that the heat will cause the monitor chassis to "overheat" and cause me problems down the road.  I've already sent the chassis in to be worked on for parts failure. Question  is: cooler better or are they made to take the heat? Thanks in advance.

They were made to take room temp heat-controled in the casinos.  What room temp is depends on where you are at. It will be fine if you have it in a heated/cooled atmosphere.   72-74 would be ideal for any game.  If humidity is a prob. look at humitifiers but it should not be, I do not use them and in a humid area just control temp and the games are happy.  Just my experience.

Are you sure it doesn't have a fan that's maybe not running or possibly been removed at some point. Everything sizzler mentioned above is true, but it's also true that heat is what kills electronics. If you wanted to you could always tap a 3 or 4" fan off a 120v switched source and find a clear spot on a cabinet wall to drill a hole and mount it. Finding a nice grill for the outside is easy.

I've always heard that it's heat that kills electronics, although I'm sure if you throw a steak on a MPU board it probably wouldn't end up well for the board.   

Since you mentioned that this is a "Games of Las Vegas" brand machine, I'm going to move this topic to the more general section since it doesn't belong in the IGT PE+ section.

...and I'll agree with what cowboygames said -- add a fan if it's getting too hot.  Excessive heat is not good for machines.

Sorry for the wrong placement. I'm still getting used to layout of the site. I'll try to check my postings closer. I'll look again for a fan but I've had this thing almost totally apart and have seen nothing. It's all modular and everything slides out. I'll check again. Thanks again.

Not to highjack Shaggy's thread here, but have any of you guys removed fans after LED conversions? I've found that without the CFs and ballasts, my S2Ks run pretty cool - enough so that I could eliminate the fans entirely. Now the machines are so quiet I can hear the speaker's electrical interference.     And bonus: without the fans, I get fewer dust bunnies in the boards.

Even if it didn't have a fan to begin with, if it's getting hot enough that it's concerning you, it's likely time to put a fan in yourself.  I added some fans to my WMS Dotmation slot because the manufacturer should have put some in but neglected to do so -- it likely saved them a buck or two when building the machines.

Well I agree, too much airflow can't be bad. Presently I leave it off between times when I play it. I will put it on my list of to-dos. Thanks everyone for the input.
