A rom error is a bad eprom. Check all eproms that their legs are not bent or not making contacts.  Also I've not read where you replace NiMH batteries with lithium, the charging circuits don't work the same.

Check them with a meter, if they are anything less than 3v replace them, but like rickhunter pointed out, check to make sure allyour chips are seated well and all legs went into the sockets with none bent over

It is unlikely those chips are bad.  First go through the eproms, a ROM error is exactly that.   You may have bad chips as well.   Then after you pass the rom error, you will probably get others, some you can easily clear others not so much.  Keep us posted on your progress.

Also, on your picture, I don't see the 2nd battery.  These boards have 2 battery, the blue 3.6v NiMH battery and then a button cell battery that backs up the memory circuit while the machine is off.  In your picture it is covered by an IGT sticker, but there appear to just be wires there?

Those are your RAM chips with an internal backup battery.  You can't test the battery voltage because the battery is internal to the chip.  If it were bad you would get a RAM error message every time you power cycle the machine as the machine wouldn't retain its settings.  US boards have a non-rechargeable lithium coin cell battery that goes where your resistor is in the photo that provide backup power for the RAM chips.  If you are getting a ROM error message then you should be looking at the ROM chips like Rick said.

After reading more I am starting to think it's the ram chips

There must be some way to test to see if they have voltage ???

Edit= sorry guys my bad it is a RAM error not ROM error

clear the RAM error.  You should turn the jackpot reset key with door open, then you will get another screen, turn key again, then it will tell you to hold down reset button in mpu tray for 2 to 3 seconds.  You will probably do this twice, then you will get an eeprom error, turn key again, then you will probably get the ram error twice.  After you clear all those, the game should play.

Well these Battery backed RAM chips are not easy to come by, I have to order from over seas.

Any idea how to convert back to the original design ??

What chips do I use in place of the battery backed type

And is it fine just to put a button cell where it's meant to be

Cheers for the help guys I'm still a Kane king green horn, I'm sure I'll pick it up quick

CMOS invalid state, you might need to replace those battery backed RAMS then.  Do you get to the point where it asks to hold reset button for 2 to 3 seconds?  Sometimes you have to do it twice, then the eeprom error, then ram error twice again.

Couldn't find it in the states, only from China.

Yeah I get to the hold test button for 2-3 seconds then she reboots and I get the same error,

I have reset 6-7 times still the same so yeah I'm thinking those bat backed rams

Is it possible to put in standard rams and install the button cell?

Thanks heaps for all the help guys

If the reset doesn't work after trying it three or four times do a full clear and key set up using a Key 040

Check to make sure you don't have any bend legs or anything on the chips.   That is usually something not inserted properly
