Five Times Pay confusion
« on: January 15, 2015, 04:42:20 PM »
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, today I went and tried to a fix an associate's S+ (five times pay) and came to find a handful of odd situations that hopefully someone can offer me some help with.

The game is a five times pay manufactured in 1992. it has a coin acceptor and hopper, no BV or player tracking.

The guy had already replaced the CMOS battery and the game was still throwing  a 12 code when i showed up. The candle was flashing slowly on top and not at all on the bottom, which i believe indicates a tilt with the door closed.

Wanting to open and close the door in an attempt to clear the code i found that there was in fact no door sensor but the green and black wires (apparently from the sensor) had been stripped so that the wires could be rubbed together to trigger the sensor. SO i rubbed them together and the lower candle began flashing fast (indicating open door i think). HOWEVER, after that i couldnt figure out how to make the door think it was closed. It's  now stuck displaying the 12 code with the top candle flashing slow and the bottom flashing fast.

Also.... the coin acceptor is getting no voltage which i think is some kind of lockout caused by being in a tilt. Also, i looked around in the menus and noticed the denom was not set to anything and the max hopper payout is zero, neither one of the options could be changed.

help me please! i have a bunch of pictures as well if anyone would like to see them.

I think the 12 error will show with or w/o door being shut.  CHeck the battery solder joints/voltage.  Once error 12 is gone we can move on.  The light on the coin mech will not light up on a S+ with door open, only lights when door is closed.

Make sure the polarity is correct on the battery too.

I agree, Check that battery. Either reverse polarity or bad solder joint or dead replacement. That 12 has to go first then 61 and 61-1. I have never known of an optic bypass by twisting the wires together, only with cherry switch or other type switch.

Great, thanks for the responses everyone. I haven't made it back over there yet but when I do, I assume I'm going to have to tell him to buy a clear chip and or a keychip? Also I should mention that I've been working at a casino for the last 5 years but we don't have any machines even close to this old so this is uncharted territory for me in a way.

How hard and expensive is it to acquire keychips and such for these machines?

Come to think of it... neither have I. It doesn't seem to work anyway hahaha

S+ machines don't have keychips.  There is a CLEAR chip which will clear the EEPROM data on the motherboard, but it is rarely needed.  If the machine has a bill validator, you will need a SET chip to re-enable the validator if it is not active.

You can typically find a 2-chip set of CLEAR and SET chips for an S+ for $10 to $20 shipped, either from a vendor here (recommended), or from eBay.  They're not tough to come by.

Candle codes for an S+...
In your case (top candle flashing slowly and lower candle flashing quickly),
the door optics are showing an open door.
Go shopping and pick up a set of working door optics.

Click on diagram to make larger if needed...>>>

The code [12] should have been gone if the battery was any good after reinstalling
the MPU board back into the machine cabinet.
Unsolder the battery off the circuit board and
use a multimeter to check for at least 3 volts DC reading.
If you get less than a 3vdc reading, than replace it with a new battery
that should read at least 3.5vdc.
Here's a way to change your MPU battery...>>>
