What is the green Varta battery used for? I took mine out because I was told it wasn't needed. So what is it used for?

On the 500 series board it is for casino system to monitor the machine when it's powered off or unplugged

That is correct. That's why you do not need it.
If you did not remove it they leak alkaline on the board and ruin some very small traces on the board. This causing door MB errors that can usually not be resolved. It would also be a good idea to clean the area where the battery was with a mild vinegar and water solution followed by plain water. Qtips work well. Remember to let dry completely before you use the board to operate the machine.
