Added ZIF Sockets to My 502 MPU
« on: May 01, 2021, 06:12:25 PM »
I just wanted to show off this project I just finished. I did it for fun mostly, but it is a nice feature to have. I plan to use this board for testing on future projects. I desoldered the old sockets from the board and added one low profile 40 pin Aries ZIF as well as four regular 32 pin Aries ZIF sockets. Came out pretty nice. There was some finessing required as they didn’t quite fit perfectly. But they do now. I’m very please with the result.

Looks pretty good. Great for a testing mule board.
Just a question couldn't you have just pressed the pins of the ZIFs into the existing sockets that were on the board. Seems like a lot of extra risk to remove the existing sockets from the board.

Yes, I could have. But I just wouldn’t have been happy with that. I’ll chalk it up to
My OCD. But I also wanted to try my new (used) solder sucker and hot air gun.

I will add, though, that all that extra work was quite fun. I enjoy getting lost in a project, and boy did I get lost in this one. Good fun.

I use low profile zif sockets on my Gameking flash boards to ease the swapping in and out of key chips

What do I need for these? 1-40 pin and 3-28 pin? Best place without mystery shipping?

I got mine from mouser.com

40 pin low profile
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/535-40-526-10

32 pin regular
http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/535-32-6553-10

I believe the low profile design only comes in 40, 28, and 24 pins.

Just FYI, seems like everyone has them for about 12.00, but Newark has them for 5.84 no matter how many you buy??? :Scratch-Head:

Does anyone make one of those that you plug into the existing zif like an adapter?

You should be able to push the ones I used directly on the old socket if you don’t feel like desoldering. I think they’d still work quite nice. And probably a lot less finessing.

I was going to place an order to see, but the items ship from the UK. Thanks for the link, though!

If you mean Newark ships from the UK? I've done quite a few orders with US and UK shipping on each and the UK stuff usually shows up pretty quick.  For some reason Newark doesn't seem to have delay problems, at least from what I've seen.

You can fix almost any electronic device by replacing the aluminum electrolytic capacitors.

Yes, Newark has those sockets shipping from the UK. Thanks for the information, I think I’ll go through with my order after all. Thanks Tony

Edit: I purchased a few more and shipping was only $10. Not bad.

Can you also use the 40 pin ZIF in a 32 pin socket (with just the extra pins unused sticking out)?

Yes, I can see that working. As long as the extra legs don’t short out some chip or something. But if you’re shoving them into the existing sockets then they might be high enough out of the way. I might do some experimenting with my other 50x board and see.

I think my other 40 pin socket is going to find a home in my 1270’s legacy board.

I tried fitting the ZIFs in the existing sockets and it’s a pretty loose fit. I turned the board over and shook it a little and it fell out.

Why didn't you buy 32-pin ZIF's? They didn't have any?

Stick some doubled-side tape along the edges...or stick the pins right thru the sticky tape.

I can guarantee you can fling the entire MPU at a wall and it won't come off...maybe other stuff will but not the ZIFs... :rotfl:

That post was just a test for user DDD. I put 32 pin zifs on my MPU. But not the low profile ones, they don’t make them in 32 for some reason.

I must have bought the wrong ones. They are too long and won't plug into existing sockets. For the SG sockets there is no way
