WMS-40X Jackpot Party dot issue.
« on: June 29, 2018, 02:57:01 PM »
I've been posting here about my big bang piggy bankin and have gained so much great knowledge.  By chance there was another 40x jackpot party locally for what I felt like a great price. It was in non working condition but  having some limited but powerful knowledge from here and the work I have done to the piggy bankin I made the purchase.  When I looked at it I ensured the cards were there along with other major components.  When it was plugged in I noticed all the red led lights on except for the far left.  Only issue was battery tilt, an no dot initialization.
I still took the chance and bought it hopping the dot issue was power related.  Replaced the battery, soft clear that was good to go.  Issue is the dot screen is completely blank not displaying Williams and no pong, diplay shows dot fail init  Does this mean the dotmation screen is done for or are there fuses in the top supply?  Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

The DMD (dotmation animation screen) is attached to the front of the dotmation metal box that is located in the top part of your machine, behind the top glass. Inside that box are 2 circuit boards. The board on the right is the 12 volt DC power supply that operates all of the dotmation stuff. If it dies then the dotmation screeen will go dark. The red lites on the I/O board in the card cage do not monitor this dotmation power supply, so it can be bad and you still get all 5 I/O board red lights on.

To get inside the dotmation box you loosen 2 scews on the top edge of the box. Not necessary to remove these 2 screws, just loosen them a turn or two. Then carefully slide the DMD screen a little to the right, it will come loose from the metal box and you can pull it forward, but it will still be attached by a couple of cables. Unplug the ribbon cable and the power cable, where they both plug into connectors on the back side of the DMD screen. Then carefully set the DMD screen somewhere safe, like on a folded towel. When you look at the bottom edge of the dotmation power supply you will see where the 12 volts is sent over to the other circuit board and to the DMD screen, I think it is a red wire. You can take a meter and see if the 12 volt power supply is working by measuring this voltage. Be very careful not to drop or twist/flex the DMD sceen while you are handling it. A replacement DMD screen can be hard to find and expensive to buy.
