E-1151-2 Bad CPU of just bad data?

Greetings,

I acquired my first E1000 this week, very similar to my E2000 of course.  However I'm having a little trouble.  Background - The machine had been in a garage for years and was full of debris, but 100% intact.  So after clearing it up, lubrication the reels and replacing the original NiCad battery I fired it up-  and it is mostly good. I say mostly because I get garbled characters in the win meter.  Checking the audit meters they too are full of garbage, backwards "c" and small letter "t",  all sorts of junk.  Disconnecting the RAM battery again didn't seem to help. However as I play the game the audit meters are slowly updating with good numbers- like total games played now read 125 for example.  So what to do?

Have you checked the condition of the win meters plug on the ribbon cable. You could have a bent or missing pin. I have seen those green socket go bad on the MPU Board.. Do you have another win meter you could try? I'm leaning toward a bad connection somewhere.

Yup, I was thinking that too at first.  But running load test #2 I do see all my 8s appear as well as the rest of the correct numbers.

A slow come on like that could mean the pins that the RAM board plugs into need to be cleaned, also remove the RAM chips and plug them back in.
Worst case it could be the headers on the RAM board need to be cleaned also.

1- OK, I'll give the small RAM board pins a cleaning and try to reset/clear them again tonight. 
2- Am I correct in assuming there is no RAM to be cleared/erased on the actual "main board"?

that is a copy of MY eprom - this guy slotmachinemech, slotmachitech etc has multiple IDs - bought from me then slamed me on ebay for selling him USED eproms with BENT PINS!!!  don't buy from this guy!!!!

Ya, he is a professional dick!
I'm not and I have a clear chip but have only had to use it once.
Simply removing those old RAM's and holding their legs down on some bare metal for a minute clears them.
That is also how you clear a jackpot on a CEI board when some dick has removed the JP reset circuit and switch.

BTW if you remove a RAM chip and it's legs are crusty that usually means the socket is also and the socket may need to be replaced.
Removing the older sockets is easy, pry the plastic head off of the board to expose the pins.
Turn the board over and heat each pin's solder pad, while the solder is liquid knock the board on the bench and the pin drops out.
Clean the holes and drop in a new socket.

I hope NOT to perform any surgery on the sockets but we'll see. Think I'll try the ground-out the chip legs too while it's apart tonight.  As for as the Clear Chip- I was looking and did see that Ebay guy selling them.  Looks like he's her in Arizona too.  Alright, off the the garage for some R&R slot tinkering...

Update: So I tried several different things to “fix” the bad data problem.  First let me say the machine does now appear to be working fine.  I’m just stubborn I guess.  The best results I obtained clearing the RAM was when I disconnected the battery, removed the RAM chips, discharged the small caps on the ram board, shorted all the chip legs together, reassembled everything THEN soldered the battery positive terminal back into the circuit.  The only issue was bookkeeping meter #2 still read 00200 when everything else read all zeros.  I did learn something- the game will play even without the battery in it. Didn’t know that.

Yup it did. The weired "power ups" went away after both cleaning and clearing .
