Pin Connector
« on: June 29, 2016, 04:19:41 AM »
Just picked up a 1969 Ballys slot for free. So I've been cleaning and fixing and could not figure out why one reel wouldn't stop spinning. So I think I got it, but I don't know the name of the pin that I need to replace on the connector board, one photo is the 2 pole type connectors on the good board the other one's are missing.. I'm hoping someone has them or may know where to get them. Thanks Paul :EmoticonHelp4:

Third reel by any chance?  I'm very far from an expert here but, I really doubt that your issue is electrical.  Sorry, I don't know the proper name of the mechanical reel stop parts.

Can't beat the price!

I would refer the pin as a main guide pin.

Regarding the reel that won't stop. Most likely its mechanical. The reel index stop arm is not engaging with the reel slot to stop the movement. Could be part of the mechanism is frozen with dried lubericant. Or a part is broken or missing. Most likely its dried grease.
With the reel mechanism out of the machine and the reels out in a secured manner as to not roll off the bench. I like to clamp the mechanism to the bench so it makes it easier to set the reels in motion. This is accomplished by pushing the J shaped lever into the air cylinder on the right of the mechanism. Closely observe what happens as the reels begin to stop. This all happens kind of fast, but within a few tries you should be able to determine what is not working properly. Also be aware of the index arms when the reels are out of the machine they can travel pass the guide slots and become miss aligned.

With all that said,

I would manually check the movement of the reel stop arms or the lack of movement. Could be just a lot of dried grease holding the stop arm from in gauging.
And for the guide pin, move the wires to  vacant apposing pins.

Hey Dave thanks for that info I'm new at  the bally's. When you talk about apposing pins, I did look up in one of my bally's book and it showed those pins in the Beau plug as grounds which are need to activate the reel stop arms. I may have to jerry rig those pins and solder back onto something close to a fit. One pin is broken altogether and the other is split as in the photo.
Thanks for your insight I appreciate the time.

Would it be possible for you to post a photo of stop arms and where the wire is linked with the stop arm mechanism.
Let me see if I have and round pins, if I do I can send you one.

Sometimes the metal fingers which slide over the copper contacts (dots) are pressing too tightly and require bending to reduce the pressure and permit easier sliding.

Yes I've used a degreaser and re-lube all those spots. The machine sat for probably 15 yrs not in use so I've cleaned and re cleaned. Thanks for the input

It looks like from that photo you have a variator on reel 3. This may very well still be gummed up.
Check the toothed gear mechanism on reel 3 from underneath the reel mech.. Make sure it is moving freely.

Regarding that broken pin - have you got a spare pin that is not used you can move the wire to on the harness ?

Made a note on the photo with some arrows. The part indicated by the curved arrow should move freely on the shaftf indicated by the other red arrow. Machines sitting for long periods of time causes these parts to freeze up as the lubericant dries out.
Got a machine that had all 3 levers completely frozen to the shaft. Thus the reels would not spin.
Sorry I haven't a part number of exact nomenclature, manual is at the shop.

Is the Clock unit ok (down to the left on Wheel-unit). One of mine stopped to work 1 month ago, but is now fixed.

Your best bet is to relocated the wires from those long broken pins to an open connector or the plugs. Your other option is to replace the whole plug. The newer style plugs do not have a removeable long pin. They are molded into the plugs. The very early beau plugs had small e clips holding the pins in place.
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

[/quote Yes Yes exactly they have the 2 small c clips on each. Whats crazy is I can't find anything and when you think that there was hundreds of these machines made SOMEBODY has to have those pins.
I spoke with a guy who fixes radio's and he knew what I was talking about and when I showed him the pins, he told me that those pins are grounding guide pins and need to be fixed. So I've been crazy trying to find them. Thanks for the info and I will keep everyone posted if and when I fix it.

I have had machines where there was nothing hooked up to the long pin.. They are used mostly as a guide pin for the rest of the plug.. If you do have a ground wire, then it would not matter what connector its attached too. It's still a ground connection, the machine will not know the difference.. As for locating just the pins, good luck.. I know I wouldn't take apart a good beau plug just for the long pins..

Looked for some old beau plugs, but nothing I could salvage guide pins from.
Here is a quick fix alternative suggestion. Take a piece of solid copper wire that has the same thickness or slightly less as half the missing pin. Solder it to the missing side approximately 3/4 of the way leaving the end free for adjusting the pressure tension. Round over the end and shape the solder if needed.

Just a follow up with this beauplug/pin connector. After weeks of researching and coming up empty it was time to improvise. I finally took the one pin connector that was only missing half the pin and used solder to build up the other side then took both ground wires and soldered them to the one pin connector and it's seems to work OK. Only issue I'm having now is the payouts from the coin hopper is not working properly,  keeps paying out only one quarter when it should pay out more. But wanted to thank everyone for there input.
