Bally e2270 restoration
« on: October 23, 2018, 08:20:32 AM »
Recently acquired a Bally 3 reel slot machine. Had the usual issue of sticky gas cylinder and reel mechanisms which caused the error codes for reel position and reel not stopping. Cleaned her all up and machine started running ok except that it intermittently accepted a coin but did not count/register it.

Decided that it was good enough to move from shop to man cave. Upon plugging her in I noticed that dispaly did not light up but general illuminations did. Manual said to check fuses and sure enough power supply fuse was blown. Tested power supply test points and no voltage.
Does anyone know if intermittent problem of not reading coin is related to failure of power supply. Is failure of power supply only cost for power supply fuse to blow or could other issues be related to this problem.
Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

First thing I would check would be the condition of the power cord. Bally E-Series machines as the EM tend to have damaged cords because the came out of the bottom and only had a small groove for them to sit it. I have actually picked up machines where two of the 3 plugs wires were either broken or showing bare wires causing blown fuses.
As for your coin in problem make sure the coin switch wire is far enough back in its groove for the coin to make contact with it. Also manually try your coin switch to make sure it’s not getting stuck in the downward position. One other trick is to lightly tap on the coin switch with something like a screw driver handle. If any carbon from arching has built up on the contacts inside the switch, this will sometime knock it off. It’s also quit possible that the coin switch it failing and needs to be replaced.
You might also want to remove and inspect the fuse hold assembly from your machine and inspect those fuse holders. They have been known to break inside and the caps won’t lock tight or straight. I can’t tell you how many fuse holders I’ve deplane for these reasons.
Please remember to make a donation to NLG for mine/our help in repairing your machines problem.. Your donations help keep this site on line.
And remember...
If it's jammed, force it.. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyways...

Checked all the coins switche and t
It seemed fine. Also fuse holder and all seemed good. Checked test points on power supply and no voltage but with fuse blown I figured there would be none. Pulled PS board and started to see if any obvious damage. Found couple zapped diodes, see pic, test with ohm meter and sure enough shorted both directions.

This would cause fuses to blow, correct?

What would be advantage of replacing parts as opposed to entire board? Money probably but as far as reliability would it be better to just go with more modern parts?

You could rebuild that PS but if your planning on keeping it around this power supply on EBay is an excellent replacement to the original. I was in on the Beta Testing of it years back and have used many of then since.
