I have a 504 MPU that had some battery damage around the Varta battery so I removed it & cleaned the area around it. I installed it into my machine with a new coin battery & Netplex Link Is Down message is as far as I'm getting, anything else I can try to get this to boot?

Acid damage killed it, it is a common error.  You could try and use wires to bypass the damaged traces, but it is tedious work.  I usually just salvage whatever IC's I can out of them and trash them once they are damage, they are still cheap enough where it isn't worth the time.  Unless you want to do it for the exercise of it, I wouldn't bother trying to fix it.

I 100% agree i used to get asked to fix these all the time and its a total waist. The amount of time it would take me to fix 1 trace damage board I could fix multiple with blown duffer ic or snapped off voltage regulator.
