Bill Validator Light Board
« on: May 08, 2020, 06:30:09 AM »
My bill validator lights are not working.  I thought the bulbs were out so I changed them.  No luck.

I then thought the board was bad so I bought a replacement board.  Still no luck.

Any advise on what is causing the lights to not work?  The validator works just fine.  It's just the lights.

Thanx in advance!

Check the connectors behind the BV, it may not be plugged in.

Thanx Mark!  Everything seems to be connected behind the BV.  Is this board associated with the functions of the BV?  I thought it was a standalone board to just illuminate the bill intake area.

I traced the wires that lead from the light board and I think it terminates to the I/O card on the door?

there are two connections for that light bezel,  first connection is behind reel 1,  a two pin connector,  has black and yellows wires,  the second connection is at the bv harness . The bill unit puts out a +5vdc signal to turn on the lamp bezel. trace the small wire bundle coming from the door, it also has the door optic wires that terminate into a connection at the same area.

Can't tell from the pic but are those bulbs LED?  If they are they are polarized and you need to rotate either the bulb or socket 180 degrees.

The original bulbs were #73 incandescent.  I bought both replacement incandescents and leds.  I know the bulbs/bulb holders are good because I put them behind the Multi-Denom display (I dont have a touchpad) and they light up.

the only true way to know whats going on is to use a meter, check for +5vdc on the Black and yellow wires,  and 13vdc coming from the door I/O,  Pin1 of the connector on the lamp board comes from pin 20a from the door I/O  it has 13vdc on it,  pin 2 comes from pin 21a on the door I/O it is dc ground. pin 4 and 5  are the +5vdc signal from the bill unit.

hope this helps

Thanx Jim!  Pin 3/4 is reading the correct voltage.  Pin 1/2 has zero voltage.  Check the connector behind the BV several times and it has read anywhere from 0-2 🤔 All other lights and such works fine on the machine.🤷‍♂️

lets get this straight so we know where the problem is!   pins 1/2 on the bezel lamp board should read +13vdc, it comes directly from the I/o card,  pins 3/4  come from the bv unit   it should be +5vdc.

On the connector that plugs into the light board, I tested pins 3/4 (I think the wires were red & red with blue stripe).  That tested 13V.
On the same connector, I tested pins 1/2, no voltage.I tested the connection behind reel 1, no voltage.I tested the connection behind the BV (several times).  It was reading between 0-2 volts.
Hope the diagram makes sense.

here is a picture of a typical connection.  does your's look like this?  what happens if you unplug the connection , do you get the  5 vdc.

the bill unit generates the 5vdc,  so something is wrong with the unit, or a wire is broken or ??

Yes, my connection looks exactly like that.

The red wires test +13V
The yellow/black wires test 0V

Seems the wires to the harness behind the BV is not outputting +5V

Hi Jim,

For some reason those 2 wires leading from the BV into the 4-pin harness were not outputting +5V 🤷‍♂️

I found 2 wires in an empty 3-pin harness leading from the BV that WERE reading +5V and swapped the wires.  Everything lit up! 👍💡

Thank you for your help!

I'm glad that you got the bezel to light up, but not following the fix??  everything in your pictures was correct, all the right plugs were connected to the right connections,  there are only four connectors that come off the bv harness, three are used and one is not used, you had all the correct ones plugged in to the proper place??  there is no other extra wires available,  please show me pictures of the fix and the new connections, I would be interested to double check that against the schematics for future reference!. Always trying to learn new things.

I tested the black/white wires from the 4-pin harness.  No voltage reading.

I tested the purple/grey wires from the empty 3-pin harness.  They tested 5V.

White Wire <----> Grey Wire
Black wire <----> Purple Wire
