IGT S+ Gold Plated
« on: June 14, 2020, 05:49:38 AM »
Picked up another slot machine over the weekend for $250. Top bulb was burnt out and had a 43 error. Owner had no reset key to clear. All fixed and running now.. but....

This is my first machine that is gold plated (came from MGM) service book was inside. Any ideas how to correct the plating or clean it up?

You would be better off finding a parted out machine with a good finish. The plating is actually a PVD coating that is applied in a vapor process. Generally metals that have once been PVD coated and stripped will not accept a re-coat. The coating is actual gold and the process is quite expensive. You would most likely have to find a chrome candidate and have it stripped down. An option could be to have all parts painted gold and then clear coated with an epoxy, but that all will still cost $800-$1000 to get all the parts to match. In cleaning PVD finishes, warm water and soap is all that can be used. Most all metal cleaners and tarnish removers only damage the surface.

The gold finish is actually titanium nitride applied by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD).  Beneath that gold finish is chrome plating. A guy once told me that he stripped the gold finish off an S+ machine using steel wool and chrome polish. It looked like he did a real good job stripping it back to the original chrome.

You might look for a small out of the way spot that won't show and verify if it is possible to strip.
