so i have a party on new years eve, i have couple slot machines which people might be playing. 1 G23 and 1 BB2e
what payout % should i set the machines up?
is 89% or 90% too high?

Kinda low when most of the machines we got out of casinos probably averaged 92%.

How does the payout works? Is it calculated from coins out and coins in? Or money out and money in?

I did 90% and been playing i put $300 and won 775 till now, playing $2 a hand

Payback percentages are calculated over millions of plays. One set for 90% could be way above or below, but after a few million plays will settle down close to the selected payback. Like flipping a coin, 50/50 chance of it landing heads or tails. At first you could have 10 heads (or more) before you see a tails, but over millions of plays it will settle down to 50/50. It's more complex with slots, but that's an example.
If you're thinking about running an illegal casino for a night, better think twice about it. All it takes is for one of your drunken friends to get pissed off for any reason and turn you in. If you decide to to it anyhow, make sure you have enough cash to pay for top payout if someone hits it.

Think they'll be around long enough to play a few million games? Doubtful. If you think you can set a machine up for 89% and pocket 11% after a night or two of play you'd better just unplug them. Nobody here (including me) would condone or encourage using home slots for illegal gambling.

You can set your machine to 85% and in the first 5 minutes you hit a massive jackpot. The payback percentage is based over the lifetime of the machine. Volatility of the games selected could have an impact as well. You want them to lose while having a good time, pick a low volatility game. You want their money but risk paying out a massive jackpot.. pick Awesome Reels by WMS.

The best thing I like to to do is throw Slot Tournaments. Buy in and who ever has the largest tito after a set amount of time wins the pot. The TITO Deluxe is perfect for Tournament mode.

You could always just load it up with credits, turn off the ticket printing/disable the cash out button and put a sign "FOR FUN ONLY. NO REAL PAYOUTS WILL BE GIVEN" so people can have fun playing it.

Slots work on a RNG (Random number Generator).
3 numbers are picked and they correspond to 3 reel stops..
You might see 16symbols on a reel strip but there are a number of stops in between the symbols.
Depending on the theme there may be 64 to 256 reel stops per wheel.

There is NO guarantee that the top award won't be hit 20 times in a row or never. 3 numbers are picked, regardless of the %% payback.
The probability of any particular combination coming up is where the %% come in to play. I have had one of my machines with an 86.5% chip and it got on a payback streak - played 3 coins and eventually accumulated 2000 credits. Assuming quarters (i run mine on tokens) that .75c to $500 in about an hour.

The difference between a 92% payback and a 96% payback is that the reel table has one more pay for 2 cherries than the other.

The Nevada gaming board certifies %% payback by running 6 simulations of 10million spins. The stated %% payback after 10million spins needs to be 0.5% within the stated percentage. Ie 92% could pay back 91.5% or 92.5% but not more or less, 6 times in a row.
