1096 coin indicator lights
« on: April 29, 2021, 03:54:10 PM »
I have a 5 coin 1096 machine that is having issues with the coin in lights. The coins always register in the machine but the lights are random. The 1st and 5th coin always light up like they are supposed to, but 2,3 and 4 usually (but not always, sometimes they behave correctly) just flash for a second then go away (even if you only put in 2,3, or 4 coins). The 4th light when lit is always dimmer then all the others (I tried switching bulbs same results). The machine is using LEDs but until recently has always worked correctly.
The image link has never worked for me on this site so here is a url link to which lights im talking about.....https://i.postimg.cc/59QCh7qZ/slot2.png

It could be a couple of things but i would start with the step up unit. It may be causing some issues due to dirty contacts. The step up unit has wiper fingers that travel across a wafer board with brass buttons. Clean the buttons and also insure that all of the fingers are pressing against the board. They don’t need to be pressing hard. Just enough so that if you lift one up about 1/8” and let got, that it will lightly snap back or click.

should be in the top compartment.  It'll look similar to the pic below and could be called the "line unit" or "coin unit" or "odds unit".

the wipers are the fingers poking out from the center ... yours probably have a different configuration, but usually the lamps would be a span of adjacent fingers connected together.  Usually the rivets are cruddy ... you can clean them off with a green scrub pad and alcohol or anything similar that doesn't scratch the brass.

a smear of 3-in-1 oil over the rivets after cleaning helps (wet finger and smear over rivets).  The goal is to make sure the wipers whizz back to the reset stop when you push in the reset solenoid  plunger on the other side of the unit.  You can push in the step-up plunger to step the unit up (turn wipers).  Most contact cleaner/lubricants contain appropriate mineral oil that works also.  Just make sure the solvents have evaporated before powering on the game ... arcing has caused a few fires over the years.

if you use something thicker like super-lube gel, make sure it's really thinly applied or the wipers can bog down and prevent the wipers from resetting all the way.

other possibility is the lamp sockets aren't great.  Try wiggling the lamp and seeing what happens.  If the lamp comes on, what to do depends on the style of lamp socket.  Info here:
