Looking for particular machine - hope I'm in the right place
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:21:42 AM »
Hello,
My name is Larry Franks, I was sent here after sending some emails out to slot machine websites.  Someone suggested I try here because "there are people on that site that can find just about everything."  I am new to this world and hope I'm posting in the right place.

I am searching for any information I can found about a certain slot machine and if it is possible to acquire the decorations from it.

I run DukesCollector.com which is the online source for Dukes of Hazzard collectibles.  I have one of the largest collections in the world and have become the authority on the subject of collecting Dukes.  I work with the cast members from the show and help curate the Dukes of Hazzard museum in Nashville.  I played the Dukes of Hazzard slot machine before and always wanted to add its flourishments to the collection.  I knew this would be quite impossible when the machine was first released and hoped it would be viable a few years later, which is now.  I recently contacted my local casino that I knew has the machine (Meadows, in Washington PA).  A very helpful coordinator put me in the direction of contacting WMS.  They helped me by letting me know that it might be possible and not against regulations to acquire these parts, but unfortunately they don't have any spares and I should try to contact the casino again. The coordinator at my local casino then asked their slot manager and eventually I wound up here.  I hope someone here can help me.

The additions to the Dukes of Hazzard slot machine by WMS were made exclusively for this machine.  I would love to add them to my collection.  I am trying to find the General Lee and police car that sit on top of the machine along with any signage I can find.  Can anyone help at all?

Thanks,
Larry

Hi Larry! Welcome to NewLifeGames.com!

If I read your post correctly, you are looking for not the slot machine itself, but the cop car and General Lee that sit on top. This would be referred to as a slot machine topper.

May I suggest you post a Want To Buy (WTB) ad in the Classifieds section here? You are looking for "WMS Dukes of Hazzard Topper - General Lee and Cop Car"

Good luck on your search! It's out there somewhere, but it may not be immediately available (since it is still in casinos). Persistence will pay off though.

"Only Contributing Members and up can create new ads in the NLG Classifieds"

I don't think I qualify for that, and I don't want to break any rules.  Do people actually sell these items that I am looking for?  I would like to find the topper and any signage used on the machine.  You know how us crazy collectors can be.  I want anything I can get.

They do come up from time to time, but depending on availability and collectability.  I've seen the Elvira topper sell for around $1,200.00.  I don't know how much the Dukes of Hazzard will fetch though.  I have never seen it up for sale, but it may show up eventually.

Oh shoot, I keep forgetting about the Classifieds being for Contributing Members only. I'm sorry to misguide you. I know you can contribute as little as $5 and get Contributing Member status, but given the piece you are looking for is somewhat rare, not sure if its worth it to you or not. You could always post once a month looking for the toppers? 12 classified ads should be worth $5 right? Just a thought.

Welcome Larry ... If my memory serves me right, one of the cast members is a collector of old slot machines. But that wont help you because I believe he collects only the antique slots. You might try Rudys Deals too at http://www.rudysdeals.com/index.php?route=common/home

On our home page we have ads for different slot dealers. While they may not have the stuff your looking for listed on ebay or their web site. Its worth a call.
You might also try calling Frank at Casino Glass in LasVegas. He seems to know where to get stuff.

Larry, Are the machines still on the floor at the casino? If so, you need to ask the Slot Coordinator (Or lead slot tech) if they LEASE the machines or they OWN them. If they lease them, forget about it-they all went back to WMS and probably got tossed/destroyed.

If they own them, most casinos CONVERT the machines to newer games. They then TRASH (In Missouri - that is the law - the parts must be DESTROYED and cannot leave the casino property) or SELL the parts (Toppers, glass, reel strips, machines, etc) to 2nd hand vendors that ship the parts/machines overseas or to mexico. The Slot Coordinator is usually the person who has those phone numbers and info as some casinos can hire 3rd party companies to convert the games for them. Don't take it personal if you get the "door slammed" in your face from the big boys (IGT, WMS gaming, Bally, etc). They are sometimes the people that convert the games FOR the casinos (Hello Mr. Casino - Let our WMS sales dept sell you these NEW kits for your older games, we will have our technicians convert the games for you for free as part of the sales contract). The Big Boys are also all Billion Dollar companies that only care about the all mighty dollar, and not one guys quest for a Topper.

If the games are no longer on the casino floors, the above postings are your best bet.

Good Luck in your search.....

Destroyed is a loose word.....
The Wheel of Fortune slot is a "licensed game" and cannot be sold by any casino to anyone. So when these are retired they are to be destroyed. There are those who do not mind doing a bit of dumpster diving and have pieced themselves a WOF one part at a time. From time to time if you watch ebay, glass, wheels, buttons, strips come up for sale.
My motherin law worked for a european deli, they had many foreign language mags for sale. At the end of the month they tore 50% of the cover off and mailed it back to the publishers for credit as proof of destruction. The mags sans cover still found their way into peoples homes.
I highly doubt that the casinos exercise signficant due dilligance that each topper part, glass pane etc gets destroyed, and if one was to get friendly with a slot tech you could probably find some of the "destroyed" parts.
When my office gets credit for the recyling of old HP servers we give them the serial numbers and then send the servers off to to an electronics recyler who more than likely parts them out. The only thing we oversee the actual destruction of is the hard drives.
If you can't afford to lose you can't afford to win.

Thanks for all the information.  I have been in contact with my local casino, but they just gave me contact numbers at wms and a third party dealer.  No luck there.  When the evilira one was mentioned, is $1200 a reasonable expected price for something like this?  I didn't understand what "contributing member" meant.  I thought it was someone who contributes information to the board.  If it's only money that you need to contribute, I can deal with that.  I'll give it a try.

Still looking.  Anyone have any other ideas on where to look?  I'd love to get my hands on any part of it I could.  I saw another post about people trying to get the software to work?  How did they get the software?  Is it available?  Thanks for any info as this is not my area or expertise.

Frank is sadly gone.
I believe RM Slot Glass (on our banner page) bought out his inventory and is keeping the business alive.

There was a WTS for some WOF kits yesterday.

To respond to the post previously WMS is Williams. IGT is the maker of the WOF platform.
Since you have no casino affiliation a phone call to corporate will get you no where, and if they find you have WOF stuff they might actually have sheriffs show up to retrieve materials under license which may end you up with a charge of receiving stolen property. If you want any help from IGT you need to walk into their local office and chat up the people. Unless your in a place like Vegas these are generally 3 - 4 people offices at best, and being away from the mothership many just forward their phones to cells and the office is not actually open 1/2 the time. Monday mornings are when you will likely find someone home.

I actually have this part of the slot machine in my collection and inventory of Plexiglas signs. It is a little beat up but I was planning on trying to clean it up as best I could to see how it will display. I can send you a picture of it this weekend and post it.
