Newbie with Bally 742A-1G dated 10-4-68
« on: November 25, 2018, 05:42:36 PM »
I recently picked up a Bally 742A-1G dated 10-4-68 from a relatives estate.  Reel mechanism and the case components look to be in good condition, however the hopper has some wiring issues. I see taped connections which will need to be redone properly and one broken terminal on a solenoid.  The entire machine needs some love but I think this will be a nice slot starter project for me.  Any suggestions, part numbers, wiring diagrams and parts sources would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Beautiful machine I think I saw those Illinois's for a 995 plus shipping shipping is done in a small flat rate box I don't remember 765 785 to Florida

Due to the cost of shipping you might look over the machine really good and see if anything else is broken so we can throw it all in one box

Welcome to the forum! Yes very nice Money Honey 742 ,I have been looking for that reel glass for over a year and ended up making my own out of plexi. Chilbooey let me know if you need any pictures of the inner working of my 742 1G  to compare and check for missing parts. Best Regards Bill

WOW... Really nice job on making that reel glass. If you didn’t say it was a repo glass, I wouldn’t have guess it. Jon is a great source of parts for these machines. He should have the coil you need. Was for the taped wired those can be fixed when you replace the coil.

Welcome, nice machine.
Try repairing the coil. Just might need to solder a short extension from the broken wire.
Crazy glue the solder lug back onto the white plastic insulator.
Check the fuses and 120 volt power cord for any damage and or exposed copper.
Plug it in, observe the machine while it warms up for any buzzing, smoke or strange sounds.
Insert a coin try the handle. Come back to the NLG EM site and post what happen.
I wouldn’t tweak, adjust or clean anything unless very obvious like the coil.
Pre adjusting and cleaning may compound any problem(s).

Everything is about the same on my side of city.
Just a little older and a couple more machines as in Pinball’s.

Thank you all for the responses.  I will take the advice given and not change anything unless absolutely necessary until I know what is working and what might be having issues.  I think the coil is beyond repair, but I will take a closer look this week to see if I can repair it.  Just brought the machine home this weekend so now I need to get a bench cleared so I have room to work.  I really appreciate the pictures of your 1G, it will be a great reference, and I can only hope to get this one looking that nice.

Do they sell to the general public, or do you need to know someone..

i checked for any additional obvious issues and couldn't find anything besides the coil.  All fuses looked good. I plugged it in and all of the lights appear to work, dropped in a dime and it was accepted without issue.  Coin went straight into the hopper and the handle was released, reels spun and stopped as expected.  Played it for a minute, hit a double cherry but hopper did nothing (as expected).  The machine needs a good cleaning and proper lubrication but nothing appears frozen.  I was happy with the initial checkout.  I even found a wiring schematic for a 742a-167 (Tic Tac Toe Caesars Palace) W1046-234 in the case.

I was more interested in the reproduction glass like the one you have for the reels.

no worries, I do have my friends that still work at the Print shop that I used to work for and maybe I get something produced but it will take time. I did find a new source for slot machines while I was looking for a Keno machine for my friends parents.   https://slotmachinesltd.com   I think I have 2 extras of the MH reel plex if needed but the color is not as heavy as the final product... PM me if interested

I have a Red Glass 873 that has a cracked reel glass and the top glass has some paint loss. I’ve been looking for a couple years for replacement glass. I can find blue, black, and a brownish color, but not red...

Finally making progress.  Machine is up and running, hopper is working well.  Few minor issues that still need work.  One jackpot not paying correctly (all of the others pay right), I need to clean the wiper boards yet.  I have a groan coming from the right side of the reel mech that I think will go away with cleaning and lube, and the bell doesn't work on any jackpot.   That last one has me stumped as the wiring looks correct, but again, cleaning the wiper boards might fix all of these issues.  Outside of the case is cleaning up nicely, inside will be a work in progress as it needs lots of love.

How far off are the larger JP payouts? Those two have separate adjustments.
