Environment & Temperature Gameking 5.3 w LCD
« on: May 24, 2021, 02:15:59 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm brand new so my apologies if this is covered somewhere, though I searched multiple keywords site-wide. I live in New Hampshire and have ordered a IGT Gameking with the 5.3 software. I'm wondering how these machine withstand the cold weather. I have a bar room on the property, but without the wood stove running in there, it's basically the same temperature inside as it is outside. There are days in the winter than it can get down to near zero. I don't pretend to assume everything would be fine with the machine, but I'm curious exactly how dangerous it is to the machine if I did try and use it in very cold temps.
 :thank_you:

I'm in Michigan and we have pretty cold winters here too.  Some of my machines are in my unheated uninsulated detached garage and they've always booted just fine in the cold weather.  The bill validators get very sluggish and don't work in cold weather, but the machine itself works just fine and the bill validator will too if you leave the machine on long enough for it to warm up.

If you're just talking about storage in those temps you shouldn't have any problems.

Hey, Tilt, thanks for the reply. Yeah, this machine (in the winter months) would be going through the following scenarios on a weekly basis:

1. Turned off and sitting in the cold for up to 1 week's time.
2. Turned on and used in the cold for up to 4-5 hours before being turned off again.
3. Turned on once the stove has warmed the bar and then used for up to 4-5 hours before being turned off again.

I suppose I just didn't want the powering on of a cold machine to screw up the board. I assumed the LCD screen would be cold and fuzzy for a bit when it powers on, much like the television that's out in the bar as well. Thanks again!

This is an interesting post. Excuse my late reply.

In my non-expert opinion this would be a real torture test for the power supply due to the electrolytic capacitors. Electrolytic capacitors lose performance at reduced temperature. The capacitance decreases and the resistance increases. If you have any aging caps without much life left, a cold start may result in a failure. That's one of the reasons some experts say always bring a slot up to room ambient temperature before turning it on. If you are prepared to replace or recap your power supplies, go for it.
