Bally E-2000 (I think)
« on: November 09, 2021, 03:38:37 AM »
Great evening to All. I’m starting a new thread because of new information I’ve received. From replies that I’ve received, I’m told this machine is a E-2000. I loaned it out, set it up, and it played great for 2 days. My friend called me said, Machine won’t do anything. When I got to his house, there were no codes, tilts, anything. opened the door and the battery on the board (left of the reels), had exploded. Only a piece of battery lead left on the board was attached to the board. Also noticed U30 chip damaged (like something fell on it and smashed chip. Of course I can’t get a straight answer. So, I replaced battery and put in a chip socket with new MC14020BCP for U30. I checked for 3.6 volts on the RAM chips, and saw it was there, turned on machine and now 6 digit LED displays 1…..
If I turn machine OFF then back ON display shows 2…..
I’m at a total loss now. Any Suggestions or thoughts? This was my very first machine and I alive it !!!

Try re-seating the two RAM chips near the battery.
Let them that don't want any, have memories of not getting any.

A Great Day to ALL. When I pulled the board this morning to reseat the chips that You recommended, I heard a rattling noise. Come to find out after reading as many threads as I can, I went straight to the 4.0 MHZ, EDC585 crystal and one of the pins was loose going into the casing. Crystal is mounted next door to the damaged MC 14020BCP. I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL THE HELP that You all provide me. I’m not there Yet, it still does the same thing. I accidentally kicked the power cord loose and I plugged it back in and display showed 5…..0. Still No luck. I found some crystals on line, so far 8-16 weeks lead time (for a 50 cent part).
Could this be the Total Shutdown of my machine? Picture included. Thanks Again.

Update: After reading some great threads, I believe that I know the cause of the battery exploding. The 3.6 volt battery that was installed before I acquired it was a lithium ion. Looking and reading I noticed this style machine is supposed to have a 3.6 volt NICAD battery, as the machine has a charging circuit in it. It was very noticeable when I looked at the board and it had oval holes for the tabs to be soldered into it. I’m awaiting a crystal to see what results I get after that piece is installed and will update or cry out for more help!

A Lithium Ion would work if the 100 Ohm charging resistor was removed and a low forward voltage Schottky (iN5817) is installed.

There is a sticky in the E-Series forum section showing how to do it.

UPDATE: IT’S FIXED!!! When the Lithium Ion battery blew up, it also physically damaged the 4.0 MHZ crystal. I found one, and installed it with a 3.6 volt NI-CAD. Turned machine on, NO errors. everything back to normal. This was a difficult, but Very rewarding project. Again, NO WAY, could I have fixed this without the assistance of fellow NLG folks. I’m ready for the next task in my collection of machines. TAKE CARE.
One other note, I have Dementia, ( some of You know it ), BUT, Becoming a member and having access all the time to the knowledge that is provided allows me to keep doing what I LOVE, Fixing things.
