Pinball S+ Reel Spin Sounds
« on: March 23, 2024, 07:51:09 PM »
Hello all,

First time poster and super newbie. Just came into an S+ Pinball machine. Everything works well aside from it does not make sounds with reel spins. Pinball bonus has sound. I have gone into the self test settings and when going to the sound test (50?), doesn’t make any sound when I test. Have also tried to adjust the reel spin sound setting but seems like that did not work as well. Just looking for some tips for this.

Once again, be gentle, I have little to no experience with slots at this point but that’s why I’m here, trying to learn!

Thank you!

Does the pull handle work? The pull handle solenoid makes the reel stop sounds. It may be bad. (Very common issue).

First of all, a 16Mhz MPU doesn't have the blue volume dial on top of the MPU.
The game volume is set by pressing the little white Test button twice so you see a zero in the [Coins Played] window, your Test button can be located either up by the power switch, or behind the power swtch.
Turn the momentary Jkpt/Reset key once, until you see a "3" in the [Winner Paid] on the display, then pressing the Spin button to change the volume.
A setting of "1" will wake up everyone in the house and next door, while "9" is quietest.  :rotfl:
Once you change it, just close the door. :hide2:

To change the Reel-Spin Sound, press the small Test button to get to the <0>, turn the Jkpt/Reset key until you see a [2].
Options are reel-spin tones and reel-stop sounds{0} or reel-spin tones only {1} using the Spin button.

So again, as a reminder.
Pressing the small white Test button switch “pages” forward through the self test mode.
To move through the options pages within page zero <0>, turn the jackpot reset key.
In your case, use Key to get to [2] for spin sounds or tones, or [3] for volume adjustments.
To change settings, press the Spin button on the deck.

Here's a link to some better instructions...>>>

Yes the pull handle works. I have gone into the settings (using the process described above) and set it to have sound while spinning. This didn’t work for me. I then went to the test page with 50 in winner paid and cycled through the sounds and hit spin reel for each, did not produce any sounds either. I also did not have any credits on the machine while doing all of this either.

The sounds for reel spinning and the dinging of credits counting up are produced by the speaker in the coin tray. That speaker has a plug mounted to the tray that mates with the machine when the tray is put in place. I'd start by looking at that connection to see if it's properly connecting the speaker.

(Edit) ...that is above the coin tray, in the bottom of the belly glass. If that speaker is disconnected or otherwise not working it could result in the bonus sound working but the base S+ sounds not working.

Would a bad connection there allow for the pinball bonus to have sounds? I’m getting fine sound with the pinball bonus but just no reel spin sounds.

The bonus sounds may be coming from the topbox computer....not the machine's main MPU.
Show us a photo of your MPU....I'm wondering if you have an AY sound generator chip in there or not?

Hmm...there's a U27 Duart chip SCN chip in the socket next to the crystal chip.
You should have game sounds.
I find it strange that there's no AY generator chip....in fact, there's NO socket?
I forgot you have the 16Mhz MPU...those I've only had a few of them and never hooked one up to a pinball kit....only Barcrest-type of games.

Where is the speaker in your cabinet?
Down at the bottom of the door?
Speaker wiring good?

Check all thepins on the bottom of your MPU connectors...mae sure no pins are folded over touching another one or bent.

Yes bottom right of the coin tray. And it sounds that the bonus sounds come from that speaker as well.

If I remember correctly the reel sound, etc, come from the normal speaker and the topbox bonus sound comes from the speaker in the coin tray.

NOT the coin tray speaker....I meant the one on the bottom of the belly door under the fluorescent lighting.
Should be green and white wires going to it.

Open the front of the  belly door and you'll see it.

Ah apologies. Yes it’s on the bottom left (looking straight at the machine) on the bottom of the belly door.

There’s some metal plating covering mine so hard to look at wiring. I’m attaching a YouTube vid, this seems to be the same style of machine I have with similar guts.

You're absolutely correct, and I had it backwards in my reply earlier.  :duh:  Thank you for the correction, and to CBRed sorry for the confusion.

There’s some metal plating covering mine so hard to look at wiring.

You need to open the belly door -- it is hinged and designed to swivel open. While holding the belly glass so it doesn't fall open and shatter your glass, pull out on the textured knob on the right side of the machine (next to the door latch) and the belly door should open. See the attached pictures for a guide.

IMPORTANT: When you go to close and latch the belly glass door, pull on the belly door frame multiple times to ensure that it completely latched. If you don't do this, you risk it appearing to latch but not actually being latched, and then having the belly door fall open, potentially damaging your very hard-to-find belly glass.
