No sound on Alpha S9000
« on: March 27, 2014, 05:07:58 PM »
Last time I fired up the machine I had no sound from any speaker, so I tried turning it off and on again and the sound came back. Today I turned it on and again no sound, I tried turning it on and off and NO sound.
So, I pulled out the little sound amp from above the 5th reel and I think it visually looks OK. I also checked the sound in/out harnesses on the board and they are fully connected. I didn't see any burns or signs of a short anywhere. The machine displays no tilts and operates fine other than no sounds.
So, anyone have any suggestions? I'm wondering if perhaps the sound amp may be bad since it seemed to be intermittently working last time I played the machine. Is this a part that commonly needs replacement? I'm unsure how to proceed. Thanks,

--Travis

I have seen some issues simular to your concern.  It was the amp board.  Not jumping out and condeming it but what I have seen.  It helps to have another "canidate" sitting around to verify (part swap/black box diag.).  Look at your back plane also.  The amp boards get hot that is why they have a big heat sink on them and a big red label that says-HOT!.  Try this-Just one time-slide it out and put in the freezer for about 10 min. put it back in and try it. Sounds crazy-huh- :arrowthruhead: .

I own only one Alpha and only have an extra ticket printer and a spin button in the way of extra parts, so no swapping available  . I'm willing to try the amp in the freezer but when I pulled it out I felt no heat at all, which thinking about that maybe suggests it is bad because if it was doing something it should have been at least warm right?  :Scratch-Head:

It will not hurt it.  I know what they say about electronics and componets.  This would determine and some times it works some times not being how bad th internal blow is of a cap.  Contraction.

I put it in the freezer a few minutes ago and will give it a try shortly.

Also... This is just a FYI . The lower speaker on a alpha s-9, and some others has issues.  From the door being open and closed in the casino by slot techs, etc. that don't give a sheet-slam these things.  The lwr speaker magnet will come off and stick to the metal plate behind it and other items, copper wires from the coil hanging etc.  The lwr speaker in my opinion fails quite often due to this and after even home users get them . May have just been a wimpy build on those.  This is however not your prob. You still have upper speakers which hardly ever fail -was just a fyi in the bally alpha thread here!.

Good to know, I just checked that speaker wire down there was out of any pinch points. I'm thinking I could try a new sound board and see if it works, if not, I'll have a spare.

Prob is the amp board air bal.  Did you look at the backplane/reeldriver board behind it yet. I have seen some get hot spots in them causing a continutity problem-Still leaning on a sound amp though.  Another member had to get one a while back and got one from rudy.  I cannot sell for those prices as my stuff is new and don't bother.  I cannot remember the exact game you have -What is it?. just a reel video-s-9?.

The wires were not the problem the whole magnet comes off the back of the speaker and strews copper wires and debris everywhere!.

Here's a picture of the machine. My understanding is that it's a S9000, but feel free to tell me if I have it wrong. I did look at the backplane behind it where the audio in and out wires connect and didn't see anything that looked like it would be trouble. Really on the whole board itself it appears fine to my eyes, I'm certainly no expert but I didn't see any burns or discoloration...things like that.

Yes sir-S-9. Get another audio amp board and try it.  On these things that is a good spare part to have and the lower pwr. supplies 12/24v. You ,myself and others have to keep in mind these things sat in casinos on 24/7 so things do fail as all things will evintually over time-No slot machine is any diff. or--for that matter--people!.  Let us know when You try the part.  - :cool_thumb_up:

yeah, I'm going to try a new amp board. Also, I will keep on eye for exploding speakers down in the belly. Truthfully though I kind of wish this was my problem because that's easy to diagnose.  :fever: ;D

Funny you say that because I suppose that tinkering around with machines is fun, however, I like tinkering around in an upgrade kind of way rather than a lets get it back to normal way. That said, this is my first real problem since I started buying machines and (jinxing myself  ;) ) I know it won't be the last. Thanks for your thoughts and tips, much appreciated.

Upgrading and expanding as far as the slot world is what it is all about.  It is very hard to stay ontop of the latest curve from the big 3 and then some.  Most of the time their latest curve on new stuff is we are on their last curve as far as tech. and games.  The games are becoming more tech. and involved in Bally, wms, igt, etc. but,  There are fun-certain ones that will always keep all our interests.  Off topic here on your post/thread-sorry.  All this other will come up soon.  Good thing we have some great members here on the diff. platforms.
