S2000 Vision Ms. Little Green Men startup issues
« on: April 08, 2024, 12:02:50 AM »
Hi,

After removing the Telltale battery and its IC on U79 the machines has still difficulties with booting.

Need to power it of and on several times before it finally starts.

It then says that it will auto setup the Netplex and after that i still need to perform a reset before it works.

Closure MCLB is often showed.

A common error in the log is insufficient memory.

RAM error is also present

How can i resolve this ?

I have two types of RAM in the board a KM684000ALP-7L and a 5L. Could this has something to do with it ?

How can i best clean the IC sockets without having a ultra sonic cleaner ?

Many thanks

They SHOULD be of same type & model.
I use a 32k & 16k to get 48k extended RAM to run the more-graphic Vision games like "Pink Panther", "Ms.LGM", or "Shooting Gallery".
Do you have the boot up jumper on, so you can if the LCD computer is picking up on the RAM stick sizes?
When booting up, you should watch to see what size "Extended RAM Passed" the LCD sees, as in the bottom photo.
You need at 32k of Extended Ram Passed to get the LCD topbox computer to display a simpler, less-graphic game such as Double Diamond Mine.
Again....you need 48k to run Ms.LGM....you may have to shop around for matching RAM sticks.
"Insufficient Memory" message tells us something might be wrong with one of the sticks.
The sockets female contacts should be okay...if you want, maybe a shot of De-Oxit, or contact cleaner that you can buy at Autozone, Advanced Auto parts store for example, will help...I'd use a white eraser on the RAM stick gold contacts.

(Disregard the yellow square I drew around some of the displayed text....I was showing something to some else with the photo.
They wanted to know how the LCD computer would pick up the CF card inserted....the "Fixed Disk" would display a "1" rather than a "zero".)

Click on any photo to enlarge if needed....they are both sized on one side of the photo be max of 1000 to fit restrictions...>>>>

Thanks for your replay

Will check the boot jumper.

I was actually referring to the board RAM. ( see picture )

About the Sims i will check later.

Those are "System RAM" chips on the MPU.
I'll be honest with you...I know nothing about those ones you have, because the only ones I've ever seen in those two RAM sockets, are embedded chips on small black or green circuit boards .

See that onechip with theroundd glass exposed.
Stick some tape over it.
The UV glass should not be exposed to any light or it may get corrupted.

Thanks,

Yes glass is already covered. It’s an old pic. Sorry

Will see if i can find some more info about the system rams. Think i can replace them anyway without making problems. Its just RAM.

The problem i had earlier ( the not spinning reel 6 ) and was resolved by popping out and in the chips tell me that there could be some kind of contact issues with the sockets. Gonna clean and replace the RAMS.

The boot jumper is a nice tip though. Thanks  :cool_thumb_up:

Is it J1 ?

I was looking if i have the board layout on paper but i havent.

The jumper is placed on the 2 pins at location [JP1] on the LCD topbox computer behind the RAM sticks.
This will allow you to see the boot-up sequence on the display.

Yes found it.

It shows 48 MB of ram and finally I can see what it’s doing during boot.

Boots within 120 seconds but hangs on closure MBL

Logic door open
Main door open
Bill door open

Can’t get it reset.

I open the main door, turn the jackpot key and. Then it goos into the settings. Push exit and close front door when it goes back on closure MBL

Whats causing this ?  :EmoticonHelp4:

There is no "Logic Door" on an S2000 Vision machine.
Unless, you have a microswitch sensor on the MPU tray?
Show me a picture of your machine's MPU and tray enclosure.

There's a jumper that needs to be installed on the motherboard or you'll get a door open l error.

Here two pictures

1 from the MPU

1 from the mainboard.

On the mainboard J1 doesn’t have any pins connected to the board.

Thanks, really appreciate your help !

That's interesting.  I've never seen an I-960 motherboard without the receptacle for the jumper.  That motherboard can also be used in an I-game and I know without that jumper in place you'll get a Door Open L message on it.  Maybe it's unused in the S2000?  I'll take a look at a couple of my S2000's tomorrow and see if they have them or not and what happens if I remove it if it does have one.

There is a zero ohm resistor across where the pins would be. Exactly the same as having a jumper on it.
This looks like an MPU problem to me.

There damn sure is.  Good eye!  I've never seen on like it before.

I agree, looks like a MPU problem to me too.

Thanks,

That zero ohm resister is that put on the back ? Need to check that.

So what’s exactly done by removing the telltale battery ? ( also will search topics on this forum )

I removed the battery and u79. What else should be set in place ?

Before i removed it the game worked well.

Could this be a RAM problem or socket issue ?

Many thanks again

No, it's soldered in and labeled R6 on the motherboard by where the jumper would be.  If you look at the picture I posted with the jumper pins you'll see R6 is empty.  With R6 in place you should not see a Door Open L (Logic) at all.

The main thing being done by removing the battery is preventing it from leaking and damaging the MPU board.  From your photo it looks like it had already started leaking and you cleaned the area up afterwards.  What may have happened is when you removed the battery it also removed some of the traces as well.

No, I don't think it's a RAM problem at all.  That would cause different symptoms.  I think it's probably damaged circuit traces from a leaking battery.

Thanks,

So the resistor could be broken as well. Yes im still busy with it  :drool04:

Some other projects came along that needed attention first.

Traces are ok if i measured them correctly but will check them ones again.

Will take out the motherboard as well and check if there is something else going on.

hi,

so I decided after a couple of weeks to have another look at the machine.

It seems that im missing 4,5 V on the door optic. No broken cable but no output on J19 Pins 3 and 4.

Could this have something todo with U79 that I have removed for example that U79 is still mandatory ?

Hope you can help a little bit so I get this one running.

Thanks

U79 is not needed for door circuits. You have a missing signal called Interrogate. All door circuits  have this signal in common. Your board will need to be repaired, or replaced.
