IGT Game King NO boot, Blinking Red light
« on: February 09, 2020, 08:19:52 PM »
Hello everyone,

First time here and need some help please. Let's preface this with I have never worked on a slot machine before.
I have searched and read through some of the troubleshooting but would like some direction.

I am helping a friend with his game king that's not booting. He said it was the greenish screen and after it set for a couple of hours it started working then quit the next day. He unplugged it for a few more days and it came up with the green screen then a blue screen where the resolution was off. I have attached pictures.

The MPU(044 Enhanced) lights come on, the first one on the left is blinking red and the next 5 are amber and the last two are green.
The money acceptor is not working and non of the lights on the front light up.
This also has the daughter board that is sitting on top of the main board.

I have not had a chance to test the PSU yet as it was a quick "hey can you look at this". I have read about testing the fuses but I didn't see any during my quick look through. I have not looked if has the Varta battery on the board.

I am wondering if I should order a PSU first or could it be a board problem. If I were to order a board what are the steps in replacing the board?

Thanks!!

The Red LED means something is wrong with the software.

Turn OFF power, slide out the MPU and inspect the legs on the chips.

Make sure the chips are facing in the correct direction.

There will be notches on the chips and square notches etched onto the circuit board next to their respective sockets.

Any history on the machine?  Was it working and then failed?  Power supply is always a good place to start.  Check the +13 & +25VDC output voltages.  You can check them at the fuses.  The blinking red light tells you the MPU isn't booting.  Bad hardware or software could be the cause.  If it has a flash memory card installed it won't have all the EPROM ICs bunker is talking about, just a boot chip.  If it has a legacy adapter board then it will.

The machine has been working fine for several years. It just started having the issues. I believe it is all flash as I didn't see any chips to replace when I pulled out the mpu. I will check the voltages on the PSU. Do you happen to have a diagram of the wiring to check the PSU? I see people talk about checking the backplane for the correct voltages but I didn't see that in my first look. I will try and dig in further tonight or tomorrow when I have more time.

Above and to the right of the fuses you'll see a connector labeled J3.  The top left position is an orange wire, it's the +25V supply.  Directly below it is a red wire, it's the +13V.  Check those and see what you get.

Alright I was able to test the voltages. I was getting 12.98 on the 13vdc and on the 25vdc I got 17.98 then nothing. It was kind of reading then wouldn't. I tried 3/4 times to get a voltage and each time I would get nothing then 17is then nothing. I am going to go ahead and replace the Power Supply and see what happens. I am going to try and use one of the vendors for a new Power Supply. Who's the best person to contact for a Power Supply? The part number is WP203F11.

I did notice that if I pull the MPU then boot the machine the money acceptor cycled. With the MPU installed the money changer would not cycle.

Also this has the all flash board and no Green Varta battery. The only chip on it says Key39 Clearboot, which I can not find on the form.

Thanks.

That's definitely too low.  Replacing it should get you up and running again.  Check with Jim (Midwest Slots) he probably has one.

the boot39 is a dev boot/keychip  it can be used on personal machines but not out in the casinos.  it is used to turn off sha and zero checks.  those 2 being the most famous errors with 044 flash boards

Installed the new power supply and still have the same problem. I am guessing it is the mpu. After resetting the power supply I was getting 24.98v and 12.98v.

Just out of curiosity could the coin cell battery cause a problem if it was low?

i'm surprised we didnt think about it before... dose the mpu have the green telltale(viartta) battery on it??  it would be hiding under the flash board if it was there

It does not. It is the 044 enhanced with the flash board and a 39 boot chip. I was wondering about the coin cell battery, and if it would cause problems.

Either that or the flash memory board.  Too bad the power supply didn't fix it, it was definitely out of range.

Can I run the MPU without the flash board to verify if the MPU is bad?

I've had the red flashing red problem if the boot chip isn't firmly seated.

I will check that again. The machine doesn't move and has been in place for over a year working. That chip is pretty solid in there last time I checked.
